What Is Your Favorite Lens On Your K1 Camera?

.
Many of us have owned our Pentax K1 cameras for a few months now. During that time we've shot thousands of photos with a variety of lenses.

Myself, I buy, try and sell lenses, that's my thing. So far I've tried over 50 different lenses on my K1. Some were ancient manual-focus prime lenses, while others were modern auto-focus zooms.

My fav "Pentax" lens without a doubt is the SMC Pentax-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited. I've tried a bunch of Pentax: non-SMC, K, M, A, F, and DA lenses - and even the 31mm and 43mm Limiteds. For my photography, the FA 77mm Limited is my most used and loved Pentax lens. Some might complain that it's AF is slow and noisy. For my AF needs, I value the 77mm ltd's accurate and reliable AF above AF speed and a bit of noise. Also I like it's rendering style.

My fav "Non-Pentax" lens by a wide margin is the Zeiss ZF 100mm f/2 Makro Planar (Leitax converted of course). I've tried many other Zeiss, Voigtlander, Sigma, Meyer-Optik Görlitz, Helios, Russian, East German, Topcon, Lensbaby, Vivitar, Cosina, Kiron, Chinon, Revuenon, and Fujinon lenses --and I think the ZF 100/2 beats them all as far as 3D rendering, sharpness, bokeh, and close focusing ability goes. If it didn't have purple fringing at high contrast edges it would be my perfect lens - but I can live with a bit purple once in a while.

Mine is the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG macro. It covers a LOT of ground!

My favorite Pentax lens would either be the 77mm limited or the 50mm f2.8 macro. Its kind of a toss up!

The FA77 is a long-time favorite of mine, along with the other amigo, the FA31. They are superb in cropped and full format, and the K1 screw drive is quiet enough that I don't miss the SDM/DC. I'll give a big vote to the M20/4, too. It is so small, it never leaves my bag now, and it is so much fun as an ultra-wide again. However, the Tamron 70-200/2.8 and the DFA 28-105 spend the most time on the camera. I don't know if that makes them "favorites" but I do find them the handiest to have on the camera.

I am constantly astounded by the DFA* 70-200, the "Mandelbrot lens". No matter how much you zoom in on the screen, there is more fine structure to see (until you hit sensor resolution of course).

The Tamron 90mm macro is delightful on the K-1, very clean and understated.

Regards,
I hear you Dave. The Pentax 50mm f/2.8 macro is super sharp (especially in pixel shift mode) and is certainly in my top 5 lenses!

The Sigma 35 1.4 was my favorite on the K-3. Now moving to the K-1 I find that it still is.

Gene, like you, I'll take a good Pentax screw drive AF lens over an SDM/DC AF drive anyday. Pentax screw drive is like the old Timex watch commericial - "It takes a licking and just keeps on ticking".

Pentax D FA 24-70 and the Tamron 90 for macro. I'm very pleased with the sharpness and autofocus of the 24-70 and the Tamron 90 is a definite bargain for macro use.

Can't agree more, just got the DFA* 70-200 as well. Smooth bokeh, nice colours and very sharp! Seems to surprise me eveytime I took a photo.

Pentax lens favourite: smc DA* 300mm F4
Non-Pentax favourite: Zeiss Makro Planar T* 2/100mm ZK

The DA*300/4 is sharp even wide open and whilst it is SDM (can be a bit slow and hunt focus) it's a lens that creates gorgeous images on the K-1. So despite having the 150-450 I'm too attached to the 300 to let it go.

The 2/100 is as much a sentimental favourite (my first one was stolen ) as a lens that creates wonderfully rendered images. I agree about the problem with PF when wide open, it can be a real pain but I'm happy to work through the problem to get the joy of the focus pop in the viewfinder as you rotate that lovely smooth focus ring. The 21 has seen more airplay of late as has the amazing 2/50, but then it's swings and round-a-bouts, and the 2/100 will be there to enchant me when the subject calls for it.

My three favorites are the FA* 28-70, the FA 35 2.0, and my newly acquired DFA15-30. The contrast on the new glass is remarkable but the old zoom and prime still shine.

I'm somewhat indifferent to focus method when considering my enjoyment of a lens, unless the specific use demands it, however since getting th K-1 I find I move between lenses regularly appreciating them all..... so I find I can't commit easily to one lens in say the "the single in" monthly challenge like I once did.

7 months K-1 ownership for me.... anyway K50/1.2 would be replaced immediately if lost...... it fits the sentimentality I find myself in from time to time.... anyway of the K 30/2.8, 50/1.2, 85/1.8 and FA31,43,77 and F*300/4.5, Sigma 70-200/2.8 OS HSM, Voigt 20/3.5, DA 10-17 and DFA 150-450 that I've used so far..... all are keepers..... Voigtlander 20/3.5 has surprised me quite a bit... all you could ask for such a compact lens.

I don't shoot wides and super-wide glass that much, but I do have two that I like on my K1.

I've got both the SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8 and the Zeiss 21mm f/2.8. Both are highly regarded. Both have very different personalities.

The Zeiss 21mm is super sharp, but there's noticable distortion on some subjects.

The Pentax 20mm is sharp enough, is very light weight, has almost no distortion, and is noticeably wider than the Zeiss. I was truly surprised at how much wider the 20 is than the 21mm fields of view.

Anyway, I am keeping both lenses as each has their place, and I'd call it a tie between these two lenses for my favorite wides on my K1.
