I have used Sigma 70-200 f2.8 & Tamron equivalent, I preferred the results from the Sigma, but the Tamron was lighter to carry. The Pentax 60-250 would be a better focal length. Digitalis' reccommendation of the Sigma 100-300 should be considered...as should the purchase of the TC 1.4....which I use with the DA*300, and that is a good combo, but you are limited by the fixed focal length, if thats an issue for you.
Happy hunting.

It certainly is, it works especially well on the K-1 and the APS-C K5IIs. My only gripe with it after working with it for so many years is that it doesn't have a circular aperture.

Pentax K5IIs - Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX DG @ 300mm f/5.6 ISO 160 1/400th

Pentax K-1 - Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX DG - @ 270mm f/8 1/250th ISO 400

A different sort of wildlife - Pentax K5IIs and Sigma 100-300/4 @300mm f4 1/320 ISO 3200, typical from rear of theater.

I had the same considerations and finally dicided for a Sigma 100-300 & Sigma 1,4 Converter for my K1 2 weeks ago. - so far I am quite satisfied but real test will be the 2017 TT on the Isle of Man.

But funny situation none the less
That is what is nice about the FA limiteds. It is also a plus for the compact mirrorless systems.
