Just a point : 16 vs 18mm is a looooot of difference. Are you sure both lens are within what you need?

There is the excellent Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF)
but its APS sensor specific
It's just that 28mm on dSLR is marginal wide angle.

I have both lenses right now, and they are two totally different lenses. Can't compare against each other I guess. But within their same focal range, I think the FA*28-70 is a better one IQ wise.

DA*1650 has SDM, is weather sealed. But built quality isn't as good as the FA*. Funny thing is, AF w/ FA*28-70 is quite abit faster than the DA*16-50. The problem w/ FA*28-70 is, 28mm isn't wide enough for a single zoom lens solution, and its front filter thread rotates during focusing -- probably the designer were in really bad mode when they put such a stupid design into this wonderful lens

If you are getting one of the two for travel or events, probably the DA*1650 is a better choice. But if you plan to use it for walkabout and family photos, the FA*28-70 is an excellent option. I use FA*2870 a lot more often than the DA*1650. As a matter of fact, I only used the DA*1650 once ever since I bought it over 3 months back, and that once was only for lens testing. On the other hand, most time I'd carry the FA*2870 when I'm out w/ the kids

Yeah, that's true. The FA*2870 is one of the fastest AF lenses by Pentax, faster even than most prime lenses.

I do not have experience with DA* 16-50mm f2.8, but I have used quite a lot
FA* 28-70mm f2.8. My personal feeling is that it can be one of be best zoom in that distance. Some time ago my brother had Nikon D200 body and Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8G ED zoom. By then we made several test shots (in raw) and at least those shots showed that FA* 28-70mm + K10D seemed to be a little bit sharper than Nikon&Nikkor.

But 16-50mm and 28-70mm?....they surely are not the same thing.

I only used DA* 16-50 f2,8 on my K10D for a bussiness photographic trip. It's a great lens with a great flaw: CA at 16mm is execive (the blue-yellow kind). In Greece's harsh light conditions it is a show stopper (for me that is). We used the N...n wide photographs all the way

Gkopeliadis,

I think there is a consensus that DA*16-50 fringes much less on the 14,6 Mp sensor than on the 10 Mp. At least in my case even @16mm the CA is nothing like I would of expected from the tests and user reviews. But most of those are done with a K10D camera and for whatever reason this body+lens combo it's really an unauspicious one both from IQ and from usage points of view.

It is superb. Has been my main lens for 10+ years.

On digital, the 28-70 is of course about a 40-105 - not terribly wide.

The 28-70 isn't what I'd call a walkabout lens - it's big, very heavy, and very intimidating for people on the receiving end. The onboard flash will likely cast shadows with it, even without the lens hood. Absolutely superb optic, though.

Which is why I just bought the 18-55 II for $169.00. Unbelievable little lens. Small, light, cheap, don't have to worry about it, contrasty as **** and unbelievably sharp if you stop down a bit. Now THAT'S walkabout lens. And if your kid kicks you in the nuts while on a swing and you drop your rig, you're only out less than $200.00, rather than $1,000.00+ on a rare optic that is very hard to find.

Cheers,
Cameron

The 28-70 is a good walk about lens on film, but not so good on digital with the smaller sensor. The 16-50 is a great set of focal lengths on digital, but a tad short on the long end. The new 17-70 Pentax just might be a better choice than either for you. It was not available when I got my DA lenses.
