Old Pentax Lenses

Dear all,

I'm new on this forum as I would like to have the advice of Pentax specialists. I've recently found some old Pentax lenses belonging to my grandfather. Unfortunately the camera was broken and he throw it away some years ago. I'm using a Canon Kiss X3 and have no knowledge about the Pentax lenses.
If you have any recommandation about what I can do with those lenses it would be useful (possibility to use with a Canon camera?).

The references are:
1.SMC Pentax-M Macro 1:4 100mm 6824259 Asahi Opt.Japan
2.super-Takumar 1:3 5/28 4161398 Asahi Opt. Co.
3. Sankyo Kohki Komura Telemore for Penta x2 No.3992106
4. Takumar 1:25 135 mm 1:4 200mm

See attached pictures also.

Many thanks for your help,

Kamei

Depending on the Canon camera, some Pentax lenses are incompatible due to the potential for collisions between the mirror and the rear element or aperture lever. You're better off putting them on a Pentax body or a mirrorless one.

Actually I have the feeling that an APS-C mirrorless (Sony or Fuji) and a telecompressor might be a better idea for some of his lenses. Don't know. I find myself grabbing more of my Sony NEX-6 (previously a5000, which just got replaced) with a Mitakon Lens Turbo and FA43 than my K-S2.

Lens 1 is a K-mount lens - you need a K-mount to EOS adapter preferably with focus confirmation chip
Lenses 2 & 4 are screwmount lenses - you need a M42 (screwmount) to EOS adapter - with focus confirmation chip again is better.
Lens 3 is a 2x screwmount teleconverter - use this with lenses 2 & 4.

The Kiss X3 is an APS-C entry level body. There should be no problems with the aperture linkage of the SMC Pentax-M Macro 1:4 100mm striking the mirror.

However, being an entry level camera manual mode exposure operation may be limited.

I have a number of friends with Canon APS-C DSLRs who are happily using unmodified Pentax lenses via adapters. No issues with the aperture lever but they always check clearances before using a "new" lens.

However APS-C Sensor EOS bodies which can take EF-S lenses [all after the EOS 10D) can take adapted Pentax-K lenses without the need to remove the aperture coupling lever. There's is more room inside the EF-S capable body and the reflex mirror of APS-C sensor cameras is smaller, so there's less chance of interference.

Hi!

The 3 lenses are good, if in order they are worth almost $100 each. The teleconverter has little value however.
Pick up a used Pentax and try them out yourself. Unless you have many EOS lenses you could be tempted to switch system...

But isn't the 4th Takumar one of the "Takumar Bayonet" lenses? Or did I mix something up?

Look at the photo: auto/man switch, metal focusing grip (no rubber).

Dear all,

Thank you for your contributions and advices. At the moment I didn't intend to change my equipment.
Nevertheless I will try to find a Pentax to try the lenses or find someone who could be interested to acquire such kind of lenses.

Thanks again!

What a wonderful gift from your grandfather! The lenses certainly look well taken care of. Do you know what Pentax or Pentax-compatible camera body he used with these lenses? I'd guess that it was one that accepted K-mount lenses, since he could have used m42 screw mount lenses on it with an adapter. Had it been a screw mount body, he wouldn't have been able to use any screw mount lens(es).

You might get an adapter that would let you use at least one of the lenses on your Canon camera body, to test the lens out. Not A Number seems to have given the best advice about that.

Like other Pentax fans here, I would encourage you to get a good working camera accepting Pentax K-mount lenses next. It could use screw mount lenses with an adapter and K-mount lenses directly. Camera choices could include Pentax, Ricoh, and Sears-labeled Ricohs, as well as a few others. Just be sure that it is in good working order and accepts K-mount lenses. If you find some prospects, you can ask more about them here, of course.

The 28mm, 100mm and 135mm are reputed to be all very good, the 200mm not so much but could be useful. There are adapters to use M42 lenses on EOS mount cameras, they can be found cheaply on ebay. I have one to use my M42 mount lenses on my film EOS cameras and they work OK, though I had to drill the locking hole a bit bigger as it was too small for the locking pin on the mount.

They should all work fine, so I would start with an adapter as it will be cheap, and you can see the results. The lenses would probably be easier to use on a Pentax DSLR (or film SLR) or even on a mirrorless camera such as a Sony NEX or A7 or Fuji X camera, but they should all work fine on EOS. The mirror won't be a problem on APS-C cameras. I think on the full frame ones it's only a problem with the 50/1.4.

They are all in excellent shape, the 28 is a very useful lens on apsc and this one has excellent iq. For the small amount it would cost to get a proper focus confirmation m42 adapter it would be worth your while as learning to use a manual focus lens will likely impact your photography in a positive manner. The ice not used the other two takumar but understand both to be good performers . If you do sell these are fine examples for whoever gets them. The lens database should give some idea on value
