Smc-m 40/2.8

I wonder how different in terms of FOV when compared to a FA43? I found my FA43 slightly too long for my APS-C K-S2 as a daily driver, would a M40/2.8 be better?

Sincerely

P.S. I did find FA43 and Mitakon Lens Turbo on a NEX-6 a very good bundle. However I do want a smaller lens for my K-S2.

If 43 was too long maybe 30 or 35...A 28 would be the same FOV as the 43 on FF...

I do have a Mir-1A and a Super-Takumar 35/2 but they are way too long in terms of dimensions. I want a more compact daily driver, otherwise I would be very happy with DA 20-40 ED DC WR.

I find that on crop I can enjoy the DA 40. But I have never used the FA 43 limited. I don't find the DA 20-40 too large however.

DA 35/2.4? It's 10mm shorter than the Super-Tak 35/2 and weighs 120g less...It's not as small as the DA 40 but it isn't exactly huge...The M 35/2.8 isn't all that big either...

I'd probably skip the M40, and go for one of the DA 35mm lenses (preferably the limited, or the DA21 if you want something a bit wider). The m40 isn't a *bad* lens, but it's throughly outclassed by the DA40, and especially the 43mm. Personally I'd look at adding the DA21. Combined with the FA43, you can't really go wrong

I just found that my Ricoh XR 35/2.8 isn't too big, should give that a try.

I do have SMC DA 15 and HD DA 20-40 so I guess I might wait and see.

The DA40XS is much sharper and renders better than the M-40 (as good as the 40 Ltd.) and available NIB for less money than a used M-40 on eBay.

I will tell you something different from the friends above. My M40/2.8 is a wonderful little lens that renders pictures beautifully! I loved it on my K-5IIs and still loving it on my K-1! In fact when my cameras are in a bag and carry them around this lens is always on. It acts like a lens cap as it is so small and at the same time you can take your camera off quickly and grab some shots that every time I nail the focus (not so hard) I'm impressed. 40mm is a very useful focal length for anything mostly for street photography and not so too wide to be used as a nice portrait lens as well. It's the lens I took for almost nothing (mainly due to LBA syndrome I guess, I didn't have any plans of where I would need it when I got it) and has impressed me more than any other vintage lens I own. Maybe I had no (high) expectations and got many great results and that along with its size made me love it so much!

My question is, when I do have a FA43 (which seems to be superior in every way), and found it slightly too long for everyday, does getting a M40 make sense as it is 3mm shorter?

That's hard to answer. Do you have a zoom or any way to simulate that field of view?
If not then I would suggest something wider to be sure.

I would think putting that lens on 40mm would answer the question. It won't show how small and light it is but it will give you the view.

I have both lenses, so not the right person to ask!

These are very different lenses, it's not just the 3mm of focal length difference. I usually drop the 40/2.8 in my bag just in case (other than mounted on my camera as a lens-cap) while the FA43 is used on purpose on certain occasions.

If you can get the M40 for a good price just go for it, otherwise get something wider like a 35mm lens which will fill a gap and complement your FA.

The thing is I also have a Ricoh Rikenon xr 35mm f2.8 Lens Reviews - Ricoh Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database and it is reasonably compact (though can't beat my Tamron 28mm f2.5 Adaptall-2 or FA43), and it seems that the M40 doesn't handle well (especially when compared to the FA43). Wounder if I should get one in good condition for 85 bucks.

---------- Post added 12-17-16 at 07:56 AM ----------

P.S. I am a mostly MF shooter so I do value the handling a lot, sometimes even over IQ, and that's why I've chosen FA43 over M40 last time - mainly of negative reviews in terms of handling. Any experience on the handling of this lens will be very useful.
