I have just swapped the nifty fifty from the DS to the K10D for a job, and put my 50-135mm DA* on the DS. Now of course the DS does not have the motor drive contacts, but, guess what, I tried it (like you do) with the DA* on the DS, and it focussed!. The DA* has the screw on it as well, but the focussing was like a non motor lens.

I took a pic and was great.

Now one thing. the noise sounded unusual. does this mean that the motor focussing is compromised when on the DS, even though it focus's okay. or, are Pentax pulling our leg about the DA* lenses not being able to work on non motor bodies.
Or it is not advisable to use the DA* on older bodies due to potential damage long term to the lens............

Only future SDM lenses will not function with screw drive (from DA17-70 on), current models (50-135, 16-50, even 60-250 I think) have legacy AF support.

Thank Pirate for this, I am glad, the 50-135 is indeed a mighty lens, and with this knowledge I might try it on my MZ-5n film as well.
