...

starting here instead of ending here would have saved be a lot of aggravation and money
it also would have saved me from having a lot of fun and learning as well

...

if I was starting where you are
i'd spend the three hundred or so on the 55-300hd and start taking the pictures you want to take
that 100mm makes a lot of difference

you can continue saving for the more refined glass
but you'd be out there doing it

the faster glass is great if you can afford it but SR or a tripod can get you a lot shots cheaper
I've found the journey through various lenses instructive and, although perhaps not the most efficient use of my dollars, a worthwhile education.

Somewhere in this thread, IIRC Bertwert indicated that he's saved about half way to his goal of the 300/4, so he may as well finish the job. He does have the 50-200 in the meantime.

Whatever you do, it's worth the wait!

It took me a year to get the DA*300 + HD 1.4x
But, I'm glad I waited for the right deal!

Scored the DA*300 for $700 on the marketplace, and the HD 1.4x from Adorama as a demo model for $389

Check around Craigslist for local labor help needed.
Make a few bucks here or there moving firewood, furniture, helping paint, lawncare, etc.
It all adds up!
You Lucky person! I was wondering who scored that demo TC from Adorama. I saw it, hesitated and when I went back to Adorama website, it was gone. Enjoy it, I ended up getting one new from B&H when it went down for a brief time in December.

Yeah...

lol this TC has been on my mind for a while, I had trouble paying $600 for it. So I just kept waiting!
The copy I got is pristine, I'm very happy and just added this to the "never selling" category with the DA*300.

My DA*200 came from them as an open box store demo.
How long ago? I haven't noticed any refurbished or open box listings at TCS since the few that were available when I purchased my lens ~Oct 2015. I might not be checking compulsively enough. I'm wondering if they still pop up.

Also, do you recall the warranty they gave for open box? Refurb was 6 month manufacturer.

Because it had never been sold, or taken out of the store, it was full warranty. It was March 2016 I found it. Nice people. Great to deal with on the phone.

as I mentioned earlier I picked up a da*300 and 1.4 tc as result of this thread

after a month of daily use here is what I've concluded

great lens...great combination
there are some real advantages regarding weather sealing, aperture and silent focusing
the focus speed on my k3/k3ii is noticeably faster

however I paid about 175usd for my last 55-300hd...there isn't an 800usd improvement in iq
I paid around 700usd for my sigma 150-500...there is a 300usd improvement at 300mm...but not an 800usd improvement at 420mm

I have pounded around in some truly crap weather since I picked this combination up...no problems
my sigma would not have fared well

also,I have missed the zoom more than I thought I would

I had the funds at the time and don't regret spending them but this wasn't my most value-rich equipment purchase

if 300mm was your goal for length, I would still recommend the hd 55-300

*****
I had forgotten that you were looking at a 100wr macro
I also picked one up this winter

my previous macro lens was an adaptall 90mm
I got it for nothing as my dentist was going hd video in his office

so was pentax 500usd better?
iq...no
everything else...YES!

I hate manual focusing
this lens' af is noisy but fast and accurate

so if I was buying...knowing what I think I know now..i would buy the 55-300hd and the 100wr
both play nice with all the bodies I have and provide nice images
both are wr
together the combination would be less expensive than the da*300 alone

I've had all the same lenses and my conclusions are different. Of these, only the DA*300 + HD 1.4X meets my expectations for hard cropping, and I regularly need to crop hard.

So... I went into The Camera Store to test out a few lenses, unfortunately only one of the four lenses I had in mind were there. I was seeking try a 300, 60-250, new 55-300, and possibly the 50-500 if they had it. As expected they didn't have the 50-500, but I was a bit bummed they didn't have either the 300 or 60-250. Therefore I tried just the 55-300, I'll say I am very surprised at the AF speed. It was pretty much instantaneous and it was completely silent on any still subject (using my K-50), but if I tried a moving object it would hunt and using AF-C it would lose the subject pretty quickly. Other than that I had quite a positive experience with it, and at $550 new it isn't out of my price range. I wonder if I should reconsider it instead of the DA*300? Well, obviously, while I was there I fondled a K-1 and 150-450; amazing, but at $5500 it is a bit out of my price range....

So, get a job.
Teenagers....

The thing with the 300 ƒ4 is you are the cost of the TC away from 420 f5.6, and while the 300 may be reachable many ways, 400 ƒ5.6 isn't.

At your current rate of savings, how much longer until you can afford a DFA*300mm? I think you've been set on it from the start...

I'm now checking the camera store's website for a slightly molested and discounted K-1 + 150-450 combo. Bottle of vim and wirebrush on standby.

I also played with a 560, which is already discounted as open box. They've been trying to sell it for over a year now... maybe I'll offer them $50?

I think it's almost a no-brainer to try any of the Pentax 55-300 variants as an upgrade to a 50-200. I own both the original DA55-300 and DA*60-250 plus the 1.4x TC. The size and weight is significant where I would only bring the 60-250 on outings where I anticipate using it a bunch. The 55-300 is compact and light enough that it will likely come on more casual outings where I'm less certain I'll want to use telephoto much. Note that it's still f4-4.5 all the way out to 190mm.

A used 55-300 is not that expensive and you ought to be able to resell it without too much loss after trying it out for a while.

The 60-250 -- while superior in several respects -- is quite expensive, even more so if you get the TC as well.

I think you might want to give the cheaper and lighter lens a try. It's definitely a worthwhile upgrade over the 50-200 and better at the long end (where it counts) than any of the less expensive alternatives (Sigma, Tamron, or older Pentax FA telezooms reaching -3#0mm.)

See here's a smart man. Down the 60-250, the 200 2.8, my Tamron 300 2.8, and a Sigma 70-300, and I'm still thinking of buying a 55-300 PLM, for portability. Honestly, the 60-250 or lens of that weight on a long hike will break your spirit. You might take something like that on day one, and come out aching and sore. On day two you'll take the 55-300.

I know my age is showing here and as a young wiper snapper you can probably carry your bag pipes for 30km if need be, but, the amount of space it take in your bag and how big your bag needs to be to accommodate everything, the 55-300 is going to give you the option go light (in case something unexpected comes up) when the main focus is going to be wide angle and shorter lenses.

There are lots of different ways to think of this....you have to figure out which makes sense to you. Hand in your decision supported by aah least a 5 page rationale detailing your logic in the morning.
