One other heretical option is a superzoom bridge camera. I rented a Sony RX 10 iii and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the lens and 1" sensor. The reach is about the same as the DA*300+1.4x. The biggest drawback is speed of use. Much of the lag in the system comes from the time it takes to extend the lens. I'm not sure if this problem exists with the Pentax PLM, but it got in the way of wildlife shots.
