Vivitar Lens Question

I often see phrases like "Series 1" when extra nice Vivitar lenses are discussed/recommended. How does one determine from which series a Vivitar lens originates? Thanks

Regards

Not sure but I think Series 1 is a line name of the lens. Like SP is a line name for Tamron.

Someone else might have a better answer.

There are Vivitar lenses and there are Vivitar Series 1 lenses, There are about 15 different S1 lenses.
Here is the list.

I don't see the Series 1 55mm 1:1.2 in the list. Is this list complete?

That is because it wasn't a series 1.

That is a list of all Vivitar lenses, not just series 1.

Recently reading about them, I recall seeinga comment that the "series one" brand was devalued at the end, by later lenses which weren't quite up-to-standard. Uncertain which lenses it referred to specifically, but clearly there is a need for some care.

I think basically it is any of the newer lenses that have an aperture starting around F4/5 (plus some of the series 1 70-210mm with rubber focus grip).

I got a mint 70-210 series 1 v3 from Ebay yesterday for under 40 delivered, they regularly go for double that so it will team up nicely with my Vivitar 100mm F2/8 macro (which is apparently the 105mm F2/5 Kiron macro before they were tarted up).

My mistake - I assumed that he was talking about a list of 15 series 1 lenses (see what happens when you assume - and when you comment on links without checking them out first )

I doubt it is a fake - who would bother PSing a fake version. There might be two versions of the vivitar 55mm floating around though. I handled a used vivitar 55/1.2 in a camera store a couple of years ago (nikon mount) and to my recollection it was not labeled as a series 1 lens (it definately did not have that red stripe).

I'd say you have a rare demo lens. It may not have been mass produced so I would hang on to it if it's a good lens. Pentax also made a few like that, that there are only a few floating around. Congrats.

Here is a link to a guy in Thailand that had three copies that he found languishing in a camera store. The consensus on that thread was that the lens was likely made by Cosina or Tomioka (same as Porst?).

The sample photos were pretty impressive.

Manual Focus Lenses :: View topic - Vivitar Series 1 55mm f1.2 Pentax K mount, How is it?

Oren, if you ever get tired of your toy, you can toss it my way. I just love stuff like that!
