The Unknown Pentax FA 70mm f/2.0

A catchy title and here are some test shots.

  • Results are not too impressive but not bad either
  • AF with Tamron 1.4x TC is dead on with the Pentax FA 50 f/1.4, fast and easy
  • Some test shots done in f/2.8 are pretty reasonable in sharpness. This is subjective and need more test to confirm
  • In a pinch without a good 70mm zoom such as my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, I would use this mysterious Pentax FA 70 f/2.0
  • Weight and size is not too bad at all, very comfortable as a 70mm prime
  • Indoor portraits are not impressive in terms of sharpness and color, more test needed to confirm
  • Results are not yet conclusive as I have only used it for few test shots
  • Flash shot with internal flash are faulted with unusable results. Seems like the presence of TC has made the internal flash unusable

Thanks,
Hin

I'm not familiar with teleconverters (I'm a newbie). What kind of results could one expect when using with a 31ltd?

TC are used in tele lens with all the caveats of f/stop loss, loss of IQ, color and contrast. I don't think I would recommend using it on the 31 limited. People would flame me if I made any other suggestion otherwise.

The 50mm is the widest focal length that I would try testing the TC on.

Thanks,
Hin

thanks for showing the tests. would you actually use this combination for more serious photos?
on a side note: i remember a long time ago there was an identify the bokeh test where someone paired a lens with a TC to give some interesting results.

It really depends on what I have in the bag. If I have my Tamron 28-70 f/2.8 in the bag, I would prefer the better gear for sure. But let say, I have my Tamron 70-300 Di LD with the Tamron 1.4x TC, along with my FA 50 f/1.4 for fast speed. I would try the combination for a good 70mm f/2.0 as a reasonable alternative to Tamron 70-300 zoom. How well it does against Tamron 70-300 in the 70mm in f/4.0, I don't have the comparison yet. But I think the 50mm + Tamron 1.4x may do better in terms of CA.

With the Tamron 1.4x, my fast 50mm works out quite well in the AF and the combination gives me a workout to see if I like the 70mm lens as a prime.

Thanks,
Hin
