on a side note: i remember a long time ago there was an identify the bokeh test where someone paired a lens with a TC to give some interesting results.
It really depends on what I have in the bag. If I have my Tamron 28-70 f/2.8 in the bag, I would prefer the better gear for sure. But let say, I have my Tamron 70-300 Di LD with the Tamron 1.4x TC, along with my FA 50 f/1.4 for fast speed. I would try the combination for a good 70mm f/2.0 as a reasonable alternative to Tamron 70-300 zoom. How well it does against Tamron 70-300 in the 70mm in f/4.0, I don't have the comparison yet. But I think the 50mm + Tamron 1.4x may do better in terms of CA.
With the Tamron 1.4x, my fast 50mm works out quite well in the AF and the combination gives me a workout to see if I like the 70mm lens as a prime.
Thanks,
