I agree with this statement.
I think the 20-40 is out. It looks great on paper, but the photos from it don't wow me. Nothing special IMHO, well at least not for the price tag.

I'd love to add the FA31, but that's a long shot on my budget... Tax season is upon us though!

I haven't considered the FA35, I'll check it out.

I'll check that out. Thanks!
I have become a fan of the 20-40 because it makes my two lens kit work (DA 20-40, plus DA* 50-135, Plus HD TC 1.4x in case)

Here's some example shots that make me like it:

These show the focal legnth a bit better:

It's been a while for me to have to choose pentax lenses since i shoot fuji now. based on what you have i would look at the 20-40 it seems to be a very decent small lens from what i have seen (It's on my short list if I fall down the pentax rabbit hole again) , speaking as a strictly prime shooter I would look at maybe a used 21 and 40xs gives good coverage and lets you keep the 15

Add 16-50, so you have weathersealing. That's what I tend to use, a DA15 if there is flare, and switch to 16-50 otherwise, then 50-150 for more reach.

Nothing wrong with a backup camera!
I've actually thought of picking up a used K-3 and throwing a 35/2.4 on it. (around the same price as a new GR)

I've held off for a few reasons - potential K-3ii successor in the next 6 months; by then I'd likely have the money to spend and put the K-3ii as my backup camera. Throw a 35 or a 21 on it and leave it on my belt for when I need it.
The other reason? I think it's harder to explain a second camera body to my wife than a new lens.

She also wants me to sell some of my work before buying any more gear ...
Well, looks like I won't be getting new gear any time soon!
I'd say the GR is less "backup" and more "alongside". Even though it's 16MP, it will resolve as well as your K-3 + most lenses, due to it's near-miraculous lens-and-sensor synergy. And it's pocketable.

I really like my HD 35 Macro, but don't shoot with it all that often. I miss my SMC DA21. It's not quite as sharp as the old Sigma Super Wide 24/2.8, but it has "it".

The 16-50 looks fine, but I won't pay the price of an SDM version. If someone converts to screwdrive and prices accordingly (~$300) I'd consider.
If you're interested in the 16-50 there is a screwdrive conversion just listed here for $400.

Here's from my 16-50 invoice from KEH, from last october, with 180 days warranty, good sdm, EX+ condition for $400, with tax and shipping. I agree $300 is a more realistic price for one with a broken SDM.

EDIT:
Crazy how that showed up on the Marketplace right after I made that comment!

I'd have to pay less - not to make a comment on their listing price, I know that's frowned upon.
Just in regards to this thread and my comment earlier. With my budget of $400, I'd rather put it towards a combination of DA35ltd and DA21ltd

Why would you pay $300 for a broken 16-50 when $300 will get you a brand new Tamron 17-50 right now?

If you can find both of those for $400 I'm impressed and jealous. I have been looking for a while not too seriously and I see prices more like $500-600 for the pair.

was't aware of that price!
But I guess you'd be paying for the extra 1mm on the short end and WR?

Ha, sorry. I meant put the money towards that combination. Likely not to get both for $400 on the dot...
But I'm hoping with some hunting around I can get both for $450-$500

With a $400 budget, you can get a nice used DA 20-40mm, which is a marvelous lens. Another alternative is a K 30mm f2.8, that I believe is as good as the 20-40mm, but manual and not weather sealed. Some folks call it the poor man's 31mm.

Somehow the Tamron pulls extra field of view over the Sigma 17-50 and is nearly the equal of the 16-50 Pentax. I don't know if this has ever been independently verified. PF's review of the three repeats this. The Tamron definitely does not have WR like the 16-50 but it also doesn't have an internal AF motor that is failure prone like the 16-50. Two steps forward, one step back, perhaps.

None of the measurements are absolute. The Sigma 17mm is likely closer to 18mm than 16mm and the Tamron is the other way around. That's my guess at least. I have seen other reviews showing field of view for these for non-Pentax cameras that agree that the Tamron is wider.

Alright!
I am officially looking for an HD DA-35mm limited macro lens... and a DA-21...

WANTED!

I already found one on eBay for under $400.
I might jump on it, but it's the silver version. Doesn't matter too much, but I'd prefer to get a black HD model.

If I can't find something by tomorrow I'll likely jump on this deal.

Cheers and thanks everyone for helping out the cause!
My wife hates you all for it!
Good for you. You know the saying happy...
