in this case a few 58mm filter rings would be a better alternative.
just getting the glass out of them is so damn hard

As an alternative to doing it yourself SRB, also here in the UK, sell filter rings without glass, along with a huge range of weird & wonderful accessories!

Does seem a bit pricey doesn't it? Better to buy some cheap filters on ebay and remove the glass.

If there are still Americans out there looking for metal hoods I managed to find a couple of shorts metal hoods at Castle Photo in Toledo when I was in the city on vacation. The hoods extend 2cm beyond the filter threads and cost about $20, but I have no idea who their supplier was as the only thing marked on the package was the diameter.

picked up a set of metal lens hoods

............ what's so special about these hoods? they do not flare out, allowing use of the original accessories.

these work great for the black FA Limited lenses and keep the same sleek look. the FA31's hood is a joke (especially when shooting portrait orientation) and the 58mm improves it a lot. ................ and 14 pounds for the 58mm.

thanks to Frank for pointing out the heliopan hoods a long time back............
.
Is this the hood for FA 31mm ?

no mines is the Short hood
if you order from there, you may want to e-mail/call. they just had a bunch of different sizes in a box. e.g. i wanted a 52mm but they didn't have one, but lucky to get two 49mm's

All FA Limited series lenses have hoods which are optimal for full frame - this makes them ineffective with cropped frame.

I just bought rubber screw-on hood ad added some 58mm empty filter rings as extender. Simple tests show, that if edge of rubber hood is pushed towards the center, vignetting will occur at the corners quite soon - it looks like this simple additional hood is near to optimal.

Has anyone found a good source for a US buyer? Either a US source or a seller who can ship for a reasonable fee? I found a 58mm on ebay once but it was the long version and does cause vignetting on the 31.
B&H sells Heliopan hoods and filters, but they are not cheap. The 58mm short is almost $50 USD.

Damn! I hate it when that happens! I usually check out the date progression to see what the activity has been and when. I just mentally skipped out on the year!
