Heliopan Metal Hoods and FA Limited Lenses

picked up a set of metal lens hoods

after a poor experience with a cheapo ebay hood, i decided to get some of the good stuff on my trip to england. i went to store called Teamwork Digital and they sell metal hoods made by heliopan. what's so special about these hoods? they do not flare out, allowing use of the original accessories.

these work great for the black FA Limited lenses and keep the same sleek look. the FA31's hood is a joke (especially when shooting portrait orientation) and the 58mm improves it a lot. the FA43 hood is insufficient sometimes so adding a 49mm does help a bit. it would be nice to try the DA40 hood but at $60+ it's hard to justify the cost. i have not had glare problems yet with the FA77 built-in hood but i purchased two 49mm hoods which can be stacked on. these definitely weren't cheap tho, 12 pounds for the 49mm and 14 pounds for the 58mm.

thanks to Frank for pointing out the heliopan hoods a long time back. too bad they didn't have a 52mm hood.

Will the 31mm hood work with full frame, or just cropped?
Thanks, Ryan

Congrats on the hood I've been using the same one on my FA31 for quite a while now.

BTW, you got the 49mm one? I'm sending you a PM ...

hey frank, maybe i should have asked you before the trip whether you wanted some. now i'm back in canada. perhaps you can try ordering online. however, they didn't have very extensive stock and so you might want to e-mail and ask which hoods they have available.

Thanks for the info. Checked their prices, shipping is abit too expensive Don't really need it anyway, but it'd be cool to have some (for the 43 and 50mm lenses)...

I've just tried it on a film body and the edge of the hood is just visible at f22.
As the viewfinder only shows 95%, I think we can conclude that there will be vignetting on full frame.

in this case a few 58mm filter rings would be a better alternative.
just getting the glass out of them is so damn hard

Hi all, may I just change the direction of this thread slighty.

As I have never seen elsewhere a discussion on Metal Heliopan Hoods on Pentax lenses. I wonder has anyone here have any knowledge of which Heliopan Metal hood would be good for the Pentax A *series 135mm F1.8. As the Pentax offered rubber version will barely "cut the mustard".

Unlike the Petax original for the 85mm f1.4 which I just managed to buy off Ebay, which also looks awesome on the lens too.

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone found a good source for a US buyer? Either a US source or a seller who can ship for a reasonable fee? I found a 58mm on ebay once but it was the long version and does cause vignetting on the 31.
