And the best "normal" Pentax lens is...

The consensus from dpreview folks and photozone reviews+user surveys, and other sites, the SMC-FA 31mm seems to get the nod as the best general use, walk-around "normal" Pentax lens available between the FA* 24 f/2 up through 50 f/1.7

So, for those of you who have a selection of primes, is the 31 the one?

nope can't afford the 31 even second hand. I have the poor mans 31 however (the Fa35 f2.0) I think the best I have is the Fa 43 ltd

Yes, the FA 31/1.8 is it!
...but mostly i have mounted the FA 35/2 just to conserve the pristine condition of my 31. But the FA 35 really rocks!
I also like the old SMC Pentax 30/2.8 a lot if light is not an issue and i'm in manual mood...

If you look back over the several hundred threads on the FA31 and check out pictures available here and elsewhere you will not be disappointed.

Like Gokenin I bought the FA43, purely as a cost measure. It is amazingly small and a joy to use, but I would prefer a wider field of view and closer focus. I'm therefore considering the DA35, but that's not really wide enough for me.

Unfortunately there is no DA28 on the roadmap. That would be the "perfect normal" for the DSLRs. The FA31 comes darned close.

Hey Uli, you're settling in quickly!

You mention the SMC Pentax 30/2.8. Maybe you'd know if there is a superior lens a stop faster in this range?

Thanks!
Superior to the 30? Hmm... don't know of anything that darn good in that range.
Maybe the SMC Pentax 28/2, but i never had a chance to get a grip on a copy. I once had the M35/2 but it was very soft wide open. The best 35 from Pentax is definitely the FA 35/2. I think i remember there was a 28/1.9 from Vivitar and a 28/2 from Kiron, but also i haven't had these on my cams.

if you're strapped for cash and don't mind size, the Sigma Fast Wides present an interesting solution

but anything pentax makes today in that range are great. FA31, FA35, DA35, DA40, FA43, FA50 ... no one will question you if you were to choose anything from between that group
