Great shots and comments about the lens

Hi, K100D, I am thinking about the same on my next trip. I will likely take the 3 (or 4) lens with me, DA 12-24, FA 31mm and FA 77mm Ltd. I will probably add the DA 50-200mm just in case.

K100D you should have let me known you were around. We'd catch up and had some nice Pentax day...
shame, anyway, nice shots, and comments.
As for other posters, I wouldn't call DA21 uselless, I'm sure I'd have lot of fun with it...

if you are traveling with any signficant others, it's better not to go with the prime only solution, unless u stick with a something that's wide to very short tele. it was bad sometimes when i had my FA77 on and i couldn't take pictures of my family with my own camera.

LOL, really made me laugh. do you still have yours? i'm thinking of replacing it with a DA* 16-50 now. but it's not that useless, did get some good photos. and saying it's useless doesn't help me sell it.

guess it all depends on your style. one suggestion is to bring most of your lenses and then decide what to use each day, instead of lugging them around all day.

its useless because the only thing it has going for it is size

there are many more lenses out there that simply replace it in usability

its F3.2 for crying out loud, and i understand if it was tac sharp at 3.2, but its not, so what the point?

=)

plus you saw my unbaised test of a puny sigma vs the 21, the 21 had nothing going for it.

also after testing a DA*16-50 at a henry's last week, at F2.8, i think it will blow it away.

here's a serious question on primes, and this post did help me a bit...

sounds like before you got the dSLR, you just had the point and shoot. Also sounds like you never stuck on a kit zoom or other.

Reason I ask is I guess I am a slave to the zooms and their convenience. I like what I have, but there is definetly something to be said for traveling light, and a 3 or 4 limited lens set could do that.

So......if all you packed were three limiteds, longest being 70 or 77....do you (or any limited/prime shooters) find yourself wanting the longer reach or the flexibility of a zoom? Yes, I know there are primes over 70, this is just kind of trying to see how best to balance the bag...I love what I have, but realize that in many cases, the 40 will do most of what I shoot with the 16-45...not everything, but most. And obviously, in a heckuva lot smaller footprint....

Just trying to see if maybe its worth dropping some lenses to go with a few limiteds/primes, and keep say, the 55-300 as the long reach lens I won't use much but is nice to have. Still searching for that happy medium lol

and by the way...love the shots

Wow what a great original post, thanks a million.

I have been torn as to what to do myself, I do have an 18-250 which i was going to take with me on a trip to Malta and Croatia but after using it and the two kit lenses this week i realise I am getting a little too fussy for this approach. It is hard though as it is unfair on my wife to keep stopping in order to change lenses, so I need to be careful.

My plan is to start with the 12-24 and the 77 (both arriving this week, the 77 is your fault ya bastard ), which I think will cover quite a bit of what I need. The 24mm is actually quite useful compared to the 20mm of the Sigma IMHO. If I can handle the weight i'll cart the 50-200 as well. If this proves cumbersome I'll just live with the blasted 18-250

I essence I agree except for one thing, you could carry 4 of them before you approach the size and weight of the 16-50. I find the wide open performance excellent compared to consumer zooms anyway.

The key thing for me is that I can carry a large/heavy 70-300mm and just throw the 21 in my pants pocket in case I need it, it was invaluable in Algonquin for this purpose. After 6 hours on the Mizzy Lake Trail I was grateful I had it.

Here are two from that 6 hour hike Tammy 70-300 and 21ltd. Be damned if I am carrying the 16-50 or 17-70 along with a 70-300 for 6 hours.

see, my photography approach is slap on the 50mm and go

if i cant make a shot, i cant make a shot.

if i bring my bag, i pack it with the 10-20 and some other junk, all of a sudden the 21 has no reason to be there.

i dont know, its weird.

pentax had the FA20 F2.8, not that large, and then boom its gone. ohh well.

Try Aden's, I find they blow all other B+M stores clear out the water.

I bundled the 77, 12-24 and W60 and they gave it to me for $1,530

That's less than prodigital.

Well sure, if you are carrying the 10-20 the 21 is essentially a paper weight.

I don't use the 21 for anything else so you are right, I just hike a lot. It's covered too well and too often by the "walk about zooms".

Aden's is where I've been buying most of my lenses this summer while in Toronto. I found them just by walking by, as no one had mentioned them to me. I got my really good copy of the 16-50 there, as well as my FA43 and FA77. Best prices in town so far, as good or better than prodigital, and they've let me take my time trying various lenses out.

As a comparison, Henry's offer was $1,800. I literally laughed at them. They took like $15 off lenses listed at $800.

Yikes! First I found out that my DA35 'has no soul', and now my DA21 is useless too! I guess I can only shoot with my DA70, until someone starts a thread about THAT lens

Seriously, I just got back from a trip using only these three DA primes, and they performed brilliantly for me. To each their own, I guess.

oops, looks like you missed that thread! (or 2 or 3 of them as I recall).... don't look for or read them, or else you'll be down to zero lenses to shoot with.
