Hey iamweasel,
Some of your shots do look a bit soft (compared to what I've seen with this lens). The shot of the firehose, though, looks pretty good - the writing shows up fairly nicely. There is no EXIF data with the pictures, though, which makes it a little hard to judge if it's a focus issue or merely a depth of field issue :-)

Oh, and I don't know what your summer is like, but here in Toronto it's been a VERY windy summer. That makes it very hard to get good flower pictures - they are always moving in a breeze. I've found this year I need to shoot with lots of depth of field (like f5.6 or 6.7 or more) and with shutter speeds of 1/1000th or even faster. Wind could be contributing to soft flowers for you.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, it was windy by the time i took those pictures of the flowers (?).
I edited the post and included some EXIF data. Hope this helps.

thank you again for the feedback.

Heather, great work with this lens. I like the first picture in the second batch a lot. Looks like an interesting building.

iamweasel, wind will bite you in the butt every time :-) I've seen nature photographers carry around homemade cloth 'walls' that they peg into the ground to act as wind breakers. I'm too lazy for that so I'll shoot with more depth of field and a faster shutterspeed :-)

With the other photos, you were often shooting wide open. If I look around the pictures, I can sort of guess where I think you focused and things look pretty sharp there. If you shoot things at an angle, you are only going to get a very small strip in your picture that is actually in focus - everything else will get progressively blurier the further away it is from your foucs plane.

I would play around with the lens more, get to know it a bit and see if you still think it's 'broken'.
