Hi guys
Any clues how to fix the hood now it's sticks and wobbles on sliding up and down.
An approved way to dismantle it ?
cheers Pete

it screws and unscrews when it is extended or retracted.

How about you post a video or photos of your problem, perhaps it is just some sand etc that can be blown out of the gap between the hood and lens body, wobble doesn't really describe you situation

Dear god there isn't any sand in there!
I presume there are two rings of felt that the hood slides up and down the barrel on
I think they must have gone flat
I just need to dissemble the hood to get at them
just wondering if anyone has done that

Get some fat elastic bands, affix one tightly to the body and to the hood, then twist. Sometimes cooling the lens helps (put it in a plastic bag outside or in the fridge for a little while), sometimes heating it a bit near a heater (be careful, of course). Once you get it off, I rubbed the threads with a soft pencil (graphite) and it NEVER stuck again. The problem is it's aluminum. Also, be careful with the amount of graphite you put on their, as it can be dirty. It only took a teeny but for this to work.

The lens also completely unscrews just by the threads on the body, but you have to twist quite hard. I recommend doing this over a nice soft folded towel. Then, the body comes apart and you can take the hood right off to graphite the threads.

FABULOUS lens! Had mine for 20+ years. Sold it at a substantial profit.

Cheers,
Cameron

Thanks Cameron we are getting warm
nothing to do with the threads but I do want to remove the hood to fix the wobbling on sliding...
When you say 'the body comes apart and you can take the hood right off '
do you mean the body of the lens or just the hood ?
thanks a lot

yes it is a fabulous lens !

wobble completely describes it ... see 12 second point of above vid...mine doesn't sllde like that.

I think people are hearing what every other person ever asked about this lens...ie how to 'unstick the hood'
when they don't understand HOW it works. Same responses in the 'other forum'
I think it's called confirmation bias
i've had the F* for years

Not sure if the felt inside the hood is the same as the SMC-K 300mm, but I had to replace the felt to keep it's hood from flopping around. The process might be similar to the F*.

I understand the desire to have everything function exactly as it should, smoothly and with a precision feel.

At the same time, if the hood screws down firmly when not in use and screws up firmly when it is in use, there's no difference in usability.
My F* 300mm isn't perfectly parallel at all times during the 'slide', but that doesn't affect me too much. Well, not at all.

A guide to disassembling the F* 300mm is an interesting read, but unfortunately, does not cover separating the hood from the body of the front objective.

In photo 1b at that link, there is a seam just behind the hood, which likely unscrews. I think Cambo was saying that you can unscrew the hood and upper limit of the hood from the body with some heavy twisting.

But do not quote me on that or blame me for what happens. That's just what it looks like and sounds like to me.

Thanks yucatanPentax for expanding on Cambos explaination and good links.
The usabiliy is effected in my case as the hood jams as it wobbles.
I'll have a go at unscrewing it at that seam

A lot of requests in this forum come down to simple, but often overlooked basics.... with help further exasperated when the request for help has only a partial fact base given in the first instance. You might want to take some responsability in regard to the answers your getting, rather then label those trying to help as having confirmation bias.
I wasn't casting nasturtians on anyone, just puzzled why the answers were for another issue.
My two sentence question at the start was as succinct and accurate as I could craft it.
