Ricoh 28-100 f4 P vs 25-70 f3.5 XR?

Hello,

I am trying to get a zoom mainly for my Sony NEX-6 (with Mitakon Lens Turbo II) as a normal zoom but will also work for my K-S2 as a telephoto zoom. I would like to hear comments, thoughts on these two lenses.

Sincerely

EDIT: Typo, should be 35-70.

Used to have the 28-100...sold...nice pictures can be taken at the low end (wide) but it is useless as tele...too dark, grey, soft...for home video was OK...Macro option is OK...I liked it...too heavy...I am not familiar with the 25-70...

as for the 35-70, I would recommend Pentax 35-70 Macro..it is an underestimated one, but is a beauty...bright, sharp (enough) wide open with great color rendition and with AF on your Pentax..

I like the Ricoh Rikenon P Zoom 28-100mm f4. Nothing special but quite competent. For the way I shoot, it's range is better for full-frame than APS-C. My copy seems to be a bit better at the long end. It has a nice pseudo-macro capability (~ 1:3.3) at the short end. (Hmm... I haven't used mine in quite a while since I now use the DA 18-135. PM me if you're interested.)
Re: the Pentax F 35-70. I have one of those too. The range is quite limited for a zoom, but it's a fun little lens that does quite well. I don't use mine much, but I'm keeping it.

Does the front element of this lens rotate when focusing? I just got my Ricoh 35-70 XR, it has a constant aperture but the front element rotates, which is a bit annoying.

Does the Ricoh pin interfere with the autofocus screw on Pentax DSLRs? And does the front element rotate?

Sincerely

Mine does not have the Ricoh pin.
It does not rotate when zooming, but does rotate when focusing. BUT... there is something of lip on the lens where you would screw on a filter, and it does not rotate. I.e., this works fine if you want to use a CPL with it.

It probably would help if I actually pulled out the lens and put it on the camera...
It does have the Ricoh pin, but it's the rounded sort that does not cause a problem.
The front does rotate when focusing.
The front does not rotate when zooming. BTW, it's a two part sort of deal. One part turns for focus. One part turns for zoom. It's longest at 28mm, completely retracted at 70mm, and just slightly extended at 100mm. It's also parfocal, so once you have the focus set you can zoom without needing to change focus.

Could you give me an idea on how big the lens is (i.e. compared to a contemporary Pentax zoom)? I have read that this lens is massive, and do worry about the size.

Do see my corrections to my previous post!
As for size, it's length is 95mm. (For comparison, the DA 16-85 is 94mm and the DA 55-300 is 111mm.) When fully extended at the 28mm end, it's 110mm.
The front filter is 67mm (as compared to 72mm on the 16-85).
It's solid, old glass, so where the 16-85 is 488g, this one is listed at 605g.
Looking at the stats, it is larger than the new D FA 28-105, but not by much.

I know that one reviewer complained about distortion, but mine just is rather minor. It's easily correctable. So, here's a straight out of the camera (K-3) macro I just took.

Could you give me all my detail on the front ring? I do not plan to use a CPL, but I do use plan to use a hood for this lens. Any suggestions on this?

Check the pics HERE and HERE and HERE.
Those all are identical to mine. You would have to use a 67mm screw on hood. They are cheap on ebay. I'm not sure if a petal hood or collapsible rubber one would be better given that it is a zoom.

So there is no front lip that does not turn? Will a tulip hood be always in 12 o'clock position?

I have one I haven't used in 5 years. Give me a few minutes to pull it out and answer a few questions.

OK. I have it IN my hand looking at it.
Front barrel ROTATES when focusing. (NO Front lip that turns seperately)
Front barrel DOES NOT rotate when zooming
Filter size is 67mm.
Macro mode clicks into function on the 28mm end
Heavy
Petal/Tulip hood will NOT always be at 12 oclock. (Petal hood WILL Rotate)
Standard collapsible rubber hood WOULD be ideal
about the size of my 18-135 DA WR

As far as image quality ? I have no complaints at all. The wider end is very good , on the long end its still good but lacks color.
I wouldn't pay more than about $30 USD for a nice copy.
