The Tokina deal was a longtime ago. Now they buy designs from Tamron...(15-30, 24-70, 18-270)

Other recent designs are all Pentax and aren't sold to anyone else. (16-85, 28-105, 70-200, 150-450, etc)

Link? I recall reading that statement at some point, but I thought he was referring to Pentax' past, not the present.

"Pentax and Olympus seem particularly vulnerable to me as long term DSLR players at this point (I consider Fujifilm already gone). Sigma will stubbornly motor on and waste time and resources that could have been put into dominating lenses. Apparently they think "entrepreneurial" means trying to topple the big boys with small guns. Samsung and Panasonic both want to be Sony so they'll likely soldier on, indeed they have to be coveting Pentax and Olympus assets, respectively. Panasonic's awkward 4/3 alliance with Olympus produces as much a competitor as it does an ally, and I'm pretty sure Panasonic doesn't really like splitting whatever share 4/3 grabs with another player. With Panasonic buying Sanyo, this increases the pressure on Olympus, as now Panasonic will own the contract manufacturer Olympus has been using."

"Pentax was at times a clear leader in lens designs, and was selling those designs to others, though this seems to have tempered in the recent past."

Operative word is 'was'. Past tense, Pentax used to sell their designs.

What about non-photography lenses? I guess Pentax no longer makes lenses for medical equipment (Hoya kept that, right?), but they still make surveillance lenses, telescopes, binoculars, no? If you count all of those lenses, it might add up to bigger numbers than looking at... DA limited lenses, for example.

Binoculars, Spotting scopes yes still, I think. Astronomy refractors no, unfortunately.

Or at least Thom believes they did. Collaborative development with licensing is a time-honored tradition for many classes of goods and many, many high quality products are made this way.

Depends what we call Pentax. B2B lines such as CCTV, machine vision and surveillance lenses may or may not still be around, marketed by Ricoh under Pentax FA brand?
