I own the 77 and had a chance to shoot it side-by-side with an A85. Granted the 85 was manual focus. I was blown away by how close the color and sharpness was on these two lenses from different times. When I was post processing the RAW images, I had to look at the exif data to tell which was which... they were that close in image quality. Credit to Pentax for making two lenses so many years apart, different in design and manufactured time, to look so close in image quality.
Well, Hirakawa Jun designed both the FA 77 and the FA*85, FWIW.

I feel kinda similar about my “Sweetheart” (Pentax-A* 85mm F1.4), but I know some day she may get left in the camera bag, for a younger model.

Powerful words. I may have just done something foolish on eBay....

I was interested in the announcement for the new D-FA* 85mm, I currently own a Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM which is excellent although I don't tend to use it that often for casual shots as its quite big/heavy. I don't doubt after seeing the prototype of the new D-FA* 50mm f1.4, that the new Pentax will be larger and heavier than the Sigma, much like the new Sigma Art Lenses.

I can see the attraction of getting a standard set of primes out first (Fast f1.4 24mm, 50mm and 85mm for example) but for me, a more compact ~85mm f1.8 with WR and DC motor would be amazing. I loved using the old K85 f1.8, so small and beautiful build!

I still think the best, however for bokeh, transitions and sharpness was the Voigtlander 90mm f3.5 APO (both shot wide open at f3.5)

On APS-C (K-01)

On 35mm Film

The main two things about the DFA85 are that it will be YUGE and there will be a lot of pointless arguing about whether it is better than the completely different 77. I'm sure it'll be a very good lens either way.

Foolish ?

If you've done what I think you've done it could be very wise

Based on the D-FA* 70-200mm I would expect then new D-FA* lenses to be exceptional. I have the Sigma 85mm which is very good, but I expect I will be buying the D-FA* 85mm.

Maybe not, I'm sure any new 85/1.4 will not be as well "built" as well as your "sweetheart"!

Phil.

I'd like to think/hope... that the new " * Star " lenses would be of equal quality, as that's what Pentax does really well.

Near mint-looking FA*85 on its way from Japan.

The one I returned a while back was amazing, but I just wasn't prepared for the size in the pre-K-1 era. Now I'm used to the DFA15-30 and DFA*70-200 I consider it rather svelte

I love my FA*85 and can't imagine the DFA*85 being better for existing owners of this out of production lens... Better coatings, more discrete paintjob, more modern autofocus... whether FA* optical formula is conducive to motorized autofocus or not may be the determining factor regarding how much work Ricoh needs to put into development. The FA*85 is not a big lens compared to the competition and it balances well on the K-1. Arguably, the DFA*85 will be better simply because it will be in production and warrantied.
