300mm vs. 60-300mm

I took the same shot (Hand held/unprocessed) with the A*300 and my Sears 60-300 f4-5.6 macro.
See what you think.

Seems to me that the "A" definitely is sharper and also has a wider dof. I was looking at the holes in the stop sign post, and despite the fact that the "A" is also much more exposed, the visible holes in the "A" are sharper than the 60-300. Also the "Hess" sign is a lot sharper in the "A" shot, but some of that I'm attributing to DOF. (I'm at work and don't have the time to search out the exif, so I could be wrong about the DOF but I think not).

PhotoMe says (if I'm doing this correctly) f/8 for the A*300 and f/4 for the Sears 60~300. If EXIF is correct, wouldn't that account for the greater DoF in the Pentax shot?

With that much of an advantage the light should be better in the Sears lens - the advantage of SMC coatings!!

Don't believe a word they say. I think the Sears is much better. I think also since the sears does such a good job you can sell me your A* 300.

Re the exposure - it's not apples to apple either since the lighting angles changed. (Exif says there is a 2.5 hr difference)

The only thing I can tell is that neither of them suck.

See what you think.
With such harsh lighting , it is just not viable to compare the two lenses. Would you mind redo shot of the same subject under normal lighting condition. Make sure you have it on a tripod and use 2s delay to ensure zero vibration.

I returned the A* 300 It was too heavy and no Tripod Mount. I ordered a 55-300 yesterday and I think I'll pick up a DA* 300 or a Bigma the first of the year since they both have the tripod mount and I can keep it on my monopod too equalize the weight for carrying around.
This made me go with the 55-300 (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1036&thread=27737853) and the price.
I owned the Tammy 70-300 ld di and hated the PF.

Ah luvs the DA 55-300

You should be pleasantly surprised. Paired with a K20D, it's my evening walk-around lens.
