Takumar 200 3.5 preset m42

I recently acquired a 200 3.5 preset and a m42 adapter to mount on a Canon EOS.
The lens is Beautiful I just cant seem to get infinity focus after a couple hundred yards.
Close focus and in between is perfectly fine and I Love the lens.
Any ideas on the infinity Focus problem??

Unless there is something wrong with the lens focusing helicoid, it sounds as if the lens might be sitting too far out from the sensor. This is a known problem with some of the cheaper M42 to K-mount adapters where some have a flange which puts the lens too far out. The M42 (and K-mount) registration distance is 45.46mm. The Canon EOS registration distance is 44mm. So when your adapter is on the lens it should give you an additional 1.46mm to the face of the mount. If I was faced with this problem, I would start by seeing if I could shift the focus point. Maybe you could try unscrewing the lens in the adapter - say 1/4 turn at a time - and see it that shifts your focus point closer. If it does then you probably have too much depth in the adapter. Then again, if that fixes the problem, you probably only need to shim the adapter.

Welcome to the forum, as already said, it sounds like a registration distance issue to me and therefore hopefully fixable.

May not be the adapter

I had a similar problem with my 200mm f3.5 Takumar. I bought it to use it with my Canon 30D, just like you mine would not focus to infinity. Initially I blamed the adapter, but when I put it on a Pentax with the correct adapter it still did not work. What I did is take it apart by twisting off the front of the lens you may need some rubber gloves to get more grip. When the front assembly was out I unscrewed it again and found that the retaining ring holding the second element from the from the front was so loose that the element moved out of position. It was so far out of position that the lens would not focus to infinity. You might be able to try something like this to fix your lens.

Thanks for the tips. I do think the second front element is loose. i removed rear element and reseated that one. getting to the second element in front proves to be much more complicated
but if I give it a slight downward shake it seems to give me better infinity focusing.. LOL

That's exactly what happened to me before I started messing around with internals of the lens. Is your lens the older version with the 2.7 meter minimum focus distance? There is a chance that it is constructed differently, so you may need to find a different way to get to the second element.

What kind of camera are you using ? I have the same lens, currently using it on my K-5II with no such problems.
