DA 70 Hood & Filter

According to Ricoh the lens hood on the DA 70 Ltd. is removable and a 49mm filter can be fitted.

Does anybody know how to remove the hood ?

Looking at the lens with the hood extended there appears to be no filter thread ?

I ask because I was wondering how to use a Graduated ND filter with this lens.

The filter screws onto the lens. The hood screws onto the filter. Both have 49mm threads.

Silly me, I was rotating the hood part, I did not realise that you had to grab the lettering and screw that.

Thank you

Since I bought my SMC DA 70 Limited 5 years ago, I have seen several threads about the DA 70 and its screw on hood. As Chrisfer shows very well you unscrew the hood from the printed part. Getting it off may be easier said than done. Many owners of this lens report it jamming on so tight that it is very difficult to remove. Forcing it off can stress the inner barrel and I wonder if this is why there are more reports of the DA 70 limited with wobbly barrels than any of the other limiteds. All of this affected mine. it is the wobbliest of my limiteds, and I have all of them but it takes beautiful pictures. What I found regarding unscrewing the hood is not to use just two finger grip. Put your hand over the entire hood, like unscrewing the lid on a glass jar, and it will come off easily. I posted my experiences in my review of the SMC version a few years ago. Apparently if you apply uneven pressure on the hood when unscrewing it, it just tightens on even more, but when I use the baby food jar lid technique on it, it comes off easier.
I hope you enjoy your DA 70 lens!

I'm a firm believer of using filters for protection of the lens. I use top quality like B+W. I've tried to put filters on my 21, 40 and 70 Limiteds...but gave up. These 3 Limiteds plus my 10-17 fisheye are my only lenses without filters. The 10-70 doesn't take filters. I live with it.

I have filters on the 21 (inside the bayonet hood) and 49mm filters on the 40 and 70. There has never been an issue getting them off - just don't over tighten them.
