Counterfeit old Pentax lenses? SMC 18/f2.8

I was cruising craigslist this evening. I didn't realize that Pentax was so popular that folks are now going out of their way to create counterfeit old Pentax lenses? But wait, it's a "Limited edition SMC Pentax 18mm f2.8 K-bayonet-mount manual focus lens for all Pentax DSLR and SLR cameras". Perhaps Pentax should have slapped that red PENTAX label around the lens body - with a new body style. Then there is that very unique lens case for it - even with an embossed "Asahi Opt. Co." on one end with Pentax on the other. I'm going to bed - my allergies are killing me....

Oh my... What a find. I mean, there's no doubt it's a genuine Pentax lens... says it right there in big red letters

Any idea what lens that was before the stick-on labels?

Yes, but it's PENTAX tape.

Well, that definitely boosts the resale value, hence the hefty price tag

Methinks you are all being a bit cynical. LAPAN is renowned for its quality lenses.

Is that a M28 f2.8 with a screw-on wide adapter?

Maybe it's not as rare as he thinks, but I think mine's a 12mm f2.8, and mine doesn't have the Pentax tape 🙂

And if it's anything like mine, it flares amazingly whenever a bright light is even near it...

That was my instant impression, it was some obscure lens with (literally) a tacked on focal length reducing accessory*. However, look at the focus and DOF scale, it doesn't look like the M28 or any other pentax lens for that matter.

The Leica tape is more expensive. The Zeiss tape is just difficult to procure.

*that, or it is the thickest UV filter I have ever seen in my life.

The first distance mark is ten meters. more like a 50mm or maybe 35 with a 0.36 or .5 wide angle converter. 18mm doesn't have to be correct of course since nothing else is.

AH dole out your $375 and quit complaining. After all the tapes is worth it.

Cynics! It says "SMC" in red as well. It must be true.
