Ever use a teleconverter with a 77 Limited?

I'm wondering if anyone has used their 77 Limited with a teleconverter? I'm hoping that the speed and sharpness of this sweet little lens might translate into a pretty good telephoto lens--with the right quality TC. Any experience you can share? Thanks.

in my opinion, the money would be better spent on a MF 135 F2.5. That will be faster and probably better than a TC on the 77.

I use a sigma 1.4x and 2x TC but only with my 70200 F2.8 and generally because I use that lens principally at the long end only.

I don't understand why anyonwe would want to put a TC on a short lens to get to a mediul telephoto, when there are so many good ones available

I don't own a AF 70, 77, and 85, but I did try my TC on FA 50 f/1.4 with reasonable results. Not great, but usable. I use Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF mc4 TC to get to 70mm. Results are reasonable but not the greatest. And I plan to try my Promaster 1.7x AF TC on my FA 50 f/1.4 to try out the 85mm f/2.8 with AF. The ultimate test would be doing some indoor shots wide open but I have not tried that to disappoint my silly idea.

Some test shots and impressions with: FA 50 f/1.4 + Tamron 1.4 x TC:

It may be a bad idea to use the TC on a fine lens like your 77 and in general people use the TC for tele. Others have mentioned about loss of bokeh among others.

I'm aware of the manual 135s--I have one. But this is my thinking-- the TC would maintain the AF, and it would maintain the smaller nature of the limited lens. It seems that it may well serve as part of a great travel kit. My question is: Has anyone actually tried this and therefore can tell me if it works well.

Thanks, hinman. I had forgotten about your article regarding your experiment with the 50/1.4. (I've learned alot from your website and appreciate your expertise.) I hadn't thought about the loss of bokeh. Very helpful--thanks!

I've got the 77mm & the Tamron 1.4 and thought about it putting them together. Then I did the math--it comes out +/- 100mm. I figure I've got the Sigma 105mm so why bother?

I understand what you mean, but...

...were else would you use a TC if not on a fine lens?

Sure, it will not be so fine any longer, but it have a chance of being OK...and longer.

If you put a TC on an average lens you will get something mediocre to really bad, so there is no point of ding this at all.

In my book, there is no reason to even getting a TC unless you have an excellent lens to put it on. If the best you have is some consumer zoom or average short tele-lens, forget it. You will get much better result from cropping.

I didn't get any TC until I got hold of the A*135/1.8, which makes a fine A 270/3.6 which easily beat the shit out of my Tokina 400/5.6 even after cropping from 270 to 400.

So from a good lens and a TC you get an OK longer lens, and sure you could buy a longer lens instead, but it wont fit in your pocket.

So donutley, without knowing much of the 77, I think you should buy a TC to test what you get from the combo. If the bokeh goes ugly (it will get less nice), sell the TC again and try another TC. Good luck! (don't forget to tell us how it works out)

I understand what you are thinking, but I am still unsure whether there is any value in it. My "minimum' travel kit is a sigma 10-20, tamron 28-75 F2.8 and the 135 F2.5. with one lens always on the camera, it is only a small shoulder bag to carry the two other lenses. Changes are quick, and easy. While a TC will be smaller than my 135, and you will keep the AF, I am just not sure you will get a useable lens out of it. But as you say, someone needs to show results. Unfortunately I don't have the 77, and the sigma TCs, due to their design won't fit on it

Before my V2XMFTC broke I used it a bit with the FA77. Worked fine on the macro end and even got some with the tele.
