Here is a testshot I took of my daughter when I got the 85mm f/1.9. It's wide open.

Super Takumar 85mm /1.9 is good lens with nice bokeh Similar bokeh (I hope) I can get from my new Pentax 50-135* /2.8

But, dreamly bokeh from Helios 40-2 I like much more And this water colour bokeh too:

It's actually very similar to my M 85 f/2, except that it's much softer wide open (f/2).
I'l try to take some comparison shots and post them.

Voe, Jay...any comments on the Jupiter-9 wide open?

I find that my copy at least is very soft wide open, but stopped down it gets
sharp in the center, and stopped down 3 stops+ it gets very good edge
sharpness also. It's an extremely good 'artistic' lens - the bokeh is very
interesting, and the disparity between center and edge sharpness at the higher
apertures makes pleasing portraits, etc.

I got mine for $150 or so, and it took about a month to get to me. You can read

Yes, but I am sorry, I do not fancy it at all. Sure it has it's charm and could be fun now and then. But the fact that you cannot turn of the "spin" effect and always have the nervous/chaotic bokeh on low aperture, ruins it for me.

I still prefer the Tak .

Spin effect is only on the certain scene (like leaves in background). I can always control it, and have no spin effect at f2.8. I'm use this lens in most cases for an obverse portrait:





P.S. Usual classic (boring) portraits I can get from most of other lens, but most people (girls especially) prefered photos from Helios

Tit for tat aside. I'm sure the Jupiter-9, Helios 40 and the Takumar 85 are all great performers for different situations. Personally, I'd like any of them as I don't have an 85mm at all.

I bought the Jupiter 9 to hold me until I could afford the 77 ltd.

IMHO, image quality is 95% of the 77. Bokah is wonderfull smooth. It can be dangerous sharp. It can be soft wide open. The lens needs to be used with a hood. I use the hood from a Tak 150.

It is a true mechanical lens. Heavy to focus, preset aperture. But it works really well with AV mode. The aperture is continuosly variable. Kinda neat. It smells like an AK47.

It is one of my favorite lenses. When I eventually get the 77, I expect I will keep the Jupiter.

As for comparison to the Helios. The bokah of the Helios is so distinctive, to me comparing it to the Jupiter, is like comparing a fisheye to a rectiliniar. They are two different beasts. Both good, just different.

I bought it from a dealer on ebay. It came complete with the original box, the plastic case and the Russian instruction manual. As with all things ebay, luck is involved.

If you have the cash, I say get the lens.

This is a hobby for me, so nothing serious but probably portraits and general. The reason I want an 85 is that I have the Super Takumar 55 and 135 and I want something in between. So the 85 and the 105 would be perfect.

exactly, and all these 85's have exactly that which makes them all perfect for portraits.
