Funny story - when I went to look at the lens, it was in the MF position. At first I could not figure out why it would not autofocus - both the seller (who was not knowledgeable) and I thought the lens was damaged. I eventually figured it out. If I wasn't honest I could have fooled the seller into thinking the lens was defective.

That would place the FA* at around $600-700 USD then, I guess. Seems reasonable.
I think we are in the right park. Someone is asking $US650 for one now: Pentax FA* 300mm f4.5 For Sale - PentaxForums.com

Fa 300 is lighter than DA 300 ... DA 300 is extremely lightweight compared to DFA 70-200 and small in size.

Prices for the F*300 are falling rapidly. Unfortunately for me I sold my F*300 with foot in very good condition for $640. I paid $975 for it only a few years ago so it was over a $300 dollar loss for me. Even now there are several F*300 lenses in excellent condition listed on eBay in the $600 dollar range. I'm not sure what's going on but it does not bode well for Pentax if their top legacy glass does not hold their value.

The F* 300 is without a doubt Pentax's finest piece of glass ever made. Even better than the FA 31.

I was reading this thread on the FA 300mm when I read your comment, which made me breathe a relief. I used this lens, always in autofocus mode. When I bought it, I did not notice that the shift mode between manual and autofocus was on the lens body, so I thought it was a defect. I tried moving the mode on the camera, but nothing to do. Anyway, apart from every comment, my specimen is like new, but most of all since the first shots I realized it is a great lens. I hope to add a brief review with photos as soon as possible.

Many thanks, Mario

Any idea why? When I paired with 1.4x Pentax with FA*300/4.5 I get max aperture of f6.7. I was assuming I would get f6.3. am I loosing half a stop? Does it matter? Thanks

$625 in the Marketplace, spotless glass with caps, Hood, box, pouch, papers and no paint marks seems to be the clearing price .

Hi siva.ss.kumar,

I do not know what to think, I tried my Kenko extender at 4.5 and the value is 6.3, probably "not a certainty", it could be a transmission error between the extender and the lens.
The curious thing is that both are branded Pentax.

Yes. 1.7
Should I flash the firmware again. Just to be sure?
Any one else sees this issue in K5iis? I will try to see if this is seen in other bodies (friend's)

I wouldn't do that, if the firmware version is showing correctly.

Yes check with another body. It might be just a quirk of the K-5iis. It seems pretty trivial anyway (not even one-third of a stop).

Here's a thought. Have you set the aperture increments (EV steps) in half stops or one-third stops? Whichever it is, maybe try it the other way and see whether it makes a difference.

Yes. That's what I tried first. Changed the EV stops back and forth. Minimum number I get is 6.7
Agreed that it isn't much. But still curious why it happens. Hopefully it isn't a faulty TC. The lens opens till F4.5
