On aps-c the 50 is nice for portraits and the 35 for street photography. For short distances like family photography you need a wide angle like the 21.

My first prime lens for use on a K-70 was the 50mm 1.8. I also found it too narrow a lot of the time, especially indoors in small to medium sized rooms. I picked up the 35mm 2.4 and no longer have that problem (or at least, it is much more rare). Definitely recommend the 35mm 2.4 for indoor shooting.

For outdoor I still prefer the versatility and weather sealing of my 18-135 kit lens, but I swap to the 35mm 2.4 if I'm looking for better bokeh on a specific shot.

I love the 50mm 1.8, but the truth is that it gets very little use now that I have the 35mm 2.4.

I have the 35/2.4 It is a really nice lens. Since I got my 21 limited it doesn't get used that much .The Da 21 and K55 are the ones that live on my cameras.

I'll second that! On the crop the 21 is an awesome wide normal walk around lens! The field of view is that of 31mm on FF.

True normal on FF is 43mm - the image diagonal of 35mm film is 43.3mm. On the crop sensor 21mm is a 31mm equalivent (21 x 1.5 = 31.5) while 35mm is a 50mm equalivent (35 x 1.5 = 52.5). With 43mm being true normal in the FF format the 21mm on a crop sensor is a wide normal. You can always crop an image in post processing if you want a tighter shot.

Better to be able to crop in post than to have a lens that with a field of view that may be too narrow for an intended subject. I shoot with 5 Limiteds and a D FA 100. If I could only keep one lens it would be the 21 which spends more time attached to my K-5II than all the others combined.

If you go to Tokyo, be sure to check out Ricoh square (former Pentax square.) I got an ex-demo 15 LTD there for a nice price; I didn't even have to pay taxes (was short of 30.000 Yen, which translates to 250€.) Customs was easy as a pie for me. Japanese customs didn't even bother to check (theoretically tax free implies you can't use or wear the item in Japan.) And once I was in Belgium, the lens was with my regular gear, so no import duties (as expected.)

I am going to Kyoto, but I suppose there are some camera stores there as well.
About the import taxes, if you have a trip longer than 48 hours abroad, you can bring back up to 800 CAD worth of goods to Canada without paying import taxes.

This is interesting that the DA 35mm lens is ￥ 18,795 ~ 230 CAD on Amazon Japan and 190 CAD on Amazon Canada!

Shinjuku has a lot of secondhand camera shop carry large amount of Pentax gears. If you buy gears at the store, It usually cheaper than the listed price on store's web site. and you get to test it too.

IMO, Go for the 21. Buildings here are packed together and can be tall, a lot of narrow road. You might be appreciated 21 more because it gives you some room. You can step in closer if you want to fill up the frame but you might find yourself unable to step back any farther because you back already against something.

I thought that might be a problem with the DA21 also (slow aperture), but found out that it's less of an issue than you think - I don't do much low-light shooting with that focal length and the lens is awesome wide open...

as far as cost, I bought a good used copy of the SMC version, not the HD, since I wanted the starbursts that the lens is noted for.....

What ever you take with you, personally I would take at least one WR lens with you, in case all you have is wet weather. We travel by motorcycle/sidecar and out last trip to Yellowstone we experienced a lot of wet weather, wind, then fog, then more rain. While I had other lenses with me, the 18-135mm WR was on the camera just about all the time.

I used to think exactly the same [why should I pay that much for a f3.2? at less give me a f2.8.] so I got a FA35 f2. however I still need more room so I went for F28 f2.8, but still need more room so I ended up with a FA20 f2.8 which all of them are a lot more expensive . Later on I sold 28 and 35 because I like 20mm more. Then my 20 broken and I didn't want to pay that much for a used FA20 again, so I am a kind of gamble with a DA21 just to find out that it is sharp at f3.2 I don't hesitate to use it at f3.2 at all. it even give me a nicer starburst effect (green ring version) which start from f5.6. I would be happier if Pentax make it the same size as FA20 in exchange of f2.8, FF capable & Wr but I don't really view f3.2 as a disadvantage any more. In fact, when I go compact on a trip, I go with DA21 only knowing it will do the job and do it well no matter in indoor or outdoor.

As for the price, it is more expensive than the lenses you listed above but it is a limited lens. I guess it is a give and take here.
