Need to decide on a macro lens

I use my macro lenses as walk around lenses and often shoot both macro and normal images on a typical walk. I have owned extension tubes in the past, but it's very rare I actually want the macro lens to be just a macro, and I definitely want it to be portable. But extension tubes are a legitimate option for some. My ex used to love hers. But I don't remember her ever leaving the back yard with that set up.

thanks for all the responses guys. im leaning towards a kiron 105mm at the moment. found one in great condition for 250.not a steal but not too expensive either.

Any zoom with macro (especially the older ones) tends as often as not to be close-focus rather than true macro, but even this can be immensely useful on occasion.
