The 40 is here and it's tiny...

Received my 40/2.8 Friday and have probably done ~150 shots with it already. What a superb little lens.

Here it is on my K20D:

Side view:

And a quick snapshot using it:

100% crop from the above (shot at f/4 so you can see the depth of field disappear pretty quickly towards the top -- it's not lens softness!):

Overall I am very pleased with it. The 40mm focal length fits my 'vision' very well; been working a bit with a couple of 50s but they are a little too narrow on a crop body. Seems like 35-40 is where I am most comfortable for 'everyday' prime shooting.

It looks ridiculous, honestly.

The K10D + grip looks much more balanced with a DA* 50-135 attached. (and much more "professional" for the ignorant).

But who cares, right? The results speak for themselves. As one of the most affordable Limited lenses, it does an excellent job.

The DA40 is one of my favorite lenses.

I just picked up the DA*16-50 and DA*50-135, but will not sell my DA40 limited b/c of it's compactness. It's a great lens and it takes some crazy sharp pictures too.

Ditto. If I have my 50 or 28 mounted, it seems every time I pick up the camera indoors I am momentarily a little surprised by the view, but with the DA40, it just usually matches what I am looking at very well. Not so much because of the *size* of the image the viewfinder (although I'm sure that plays a role) but also in how *much* of the scene I am seeing. This is also true outdoors in the woods or other relatively tight quarters, although get me in more open spaces and the 28 starts looking right. And of course, ask me to shoot a portrait and the 50 beats the 40.

The 40mm Ltd falls in to my "Brutally Sharp" category. It is an awesome lens.

Enjoy.

Hey Ben,

Have seen you attach this label to a few lenses, and you have had your hands on a lot more lenses than me, so can you "publish" your list of "brutally sharp" lenses here?

Thanks,
Todd

Possibly the sharpest 8x10 print I've ever made came from the DA 40ltd. That
surprised me, because I hadn't heard that it was so blisteringly sharp before
that, people mostly talk about it's size. But it's an extremely sharp lens.

I want one now, not for sharpness, but because it looks so silly!
