Talk me out of buying the HD DA20-40?

I'm trying to find a reason NOT to buy the DA 20-40. It is currently $696.95 at Adorama, B&H and Amazon which includes the $100 instant rebate.

I have too many lenses to list here, but I have the focal length covered with my 17-70 SDM which I do love. I also already have the FA 43 and FA77, so buying the FA 31 first would complete my trifecta.

Before anyone asks about a future K1, yes I will be buying one in the next couple of months and no, that isn't swaying me from the lens. I wasn't that interested until I saw some shots and reviews on the lens. Now I'm very interested in this as a walk around WR lens.

LBA isnt easy my friend. if i were you id save for the FA31 since you have the other 2...or even consider the DA21 ltd instead. Unless you really need the WR and in that case id suggest the 16-85

I love the 20-40, probably my most used lens right now. But given the direction you are going in the FA 31 probably makes more sense.

And therein lies the problem, everyone that owns the 20-40 seems to really like it and more importantly they use it. The DA 21 is another one I've lusted after, especially when I consider that aside from M lenses, I have very little wider than the 43.

The 16-85 was a consideration, but it's a larger lens I believe, much like my 17-70.

I have the SMC DA 21 Ltd - it's practically perfect: small, light, quick AF, beautiful colors....

I think the K-1 and FF usage is the best reason against that lens. The other parts are relatively slow aperture and high price.
To me, its a really tempting lens (great FoV, build, character of photos). But I have enough primes in that range to keep me happy - lenses with similarly strong contrasts, character (DA 21mm, DA 40mm XS). That said, my camera is not WR, so thats not a factor at all

Certainly!

Don't buy one.

Don't even consider it.

You don't need it.

You will not notice any difference in the photographs you take with it compared to the lenses you now own.

You have been reading threads populated with posts of those people who were weak-willed and bought one.

Now they are trying to justify their own weakness by convincing you (and others) to buy one.

If they can convince you then they will feel better because it helps convince them that they actually did the right thing.

Finally, (and most importantly) are you really using your present lenses to their full potential? If so, then completely ignore everything I have already said.

There...did that help at all?

EDIT - Of course Pentax (and every other camera company) would shortly go out of business if everyone followed this advice.

The 20-40 is a great lens. It lives on my K10(infrared). I've used it more than my other lenses. I don't know if it is ok for FF.

Here are some samples:

I needed something to replace my broken 16-50mm with WR and picked one of these up. No regrets. I also have 21mm and 40mm but WR is somewhat important when I travel. But just ask if you really need it or if you just want it...

The 15 + 20-40 is a very convenient Kit for travel. You should Try to find an used one. I'm thinking of either sell the 21 + 35 Macro to keep it and buy a D-FA 100. My 2 cents. Good luck with your LBA

The only negative is that it will only be usable in crop on your future K-1. Otherwise, if it covers focal lengths you like and you will use it, it makes a lot of sense.

There's way too much truth in what you wrote, so maybe I'll ignore it.

Here's my thinking, (and what's getting me in trouble). With the 20-40, I could put it on my K3 and it would be great as an all around WR lens when I travel. When I get the K1, I could add the 31 plus the 100 macro and I would have a nice full frame kit.

This doesn't include the plethora of M42, K, M & A lenses I have, which cover me quite well from 24 to 200. Nor the several zooms I have. I could get rid of the 55-300 and Sigma 24-105, both excellent copies, in mint condition which I purchased new. That would give me a little more room...

Reviews. Read as many as you can. Many say it's great; others that's it's soft and vignettes.
