WR Travel Lens(es) For K1? Pentax-D FA 24-70mm Or Recommend Something Else?

Hello all!

I need a travel lens(es?) for a trip to the Desert. The ideal lens would be suited for indoor shooting (so wide is important), and just enough reach for portraits. Originally I wanted to go with two primes (135mm + ~20mm wide), but I don't like the idea of changing lenses in dusty conditions. My only issue with the 24-70 is that it looks big and heavy... I can carry a short prime all day long, and a long prime in the backpack for when needed. But with the 24-70mm, I could keep the lens attached through-out the entire trip and not worry about a spec of dust.

Requirements:
WR seals
Autofocus (absolute must)
Full Frame
~$1000

What are your thoughts about this?

For what it's worth, my experience is the 28-105 is worth every penny...

Get the DFA 28-105. It's about half of your budget and amazingly good.

I'd probably go with the 28-105 unless you need to shoot f2.8 or you think you would want the extra 4mm on the wide end. Honestly, if you are at 28mm and it is not wide enough, shooting a panorama will probably get you there without problem in most situations.

Don't get me wrong, I own the DFA 24--70 and it's a really nice lens, but I think for less money the 28-105 will probably serve your purposes admirably.

I opted for the DA* 55 1.4 for my K-1 WR kit.
Reasons for this are better weather sealing because of AWR instead of WR and being prime it is less likely to be effected by the elemets compared to a zoom.

The 24-70 doesn't feel as big or heavy as the specs suggest. Without its hood it's a little wider than the DA*16-50, but no longer. It handles well on the K-1.

I haven't used the 28-105, but I reckon a strong case can be made for it, especially with the high ISO capabilities of the K-1.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, what about the DA*55 as the "kit lens", the DFA15-30 for wide duties, and DFA100WR for portraits and macros?

It all depends on what other lenses you have.

The 28-105 is excellent for travel shots, but I do at times miss the few extra MMs. Overall I'd still pick it over the heavier 24-70, though, as you get more reach and spare funds for an extra prime.

IMaybe not what you want to hear but one lens I was happy with was the DA 55-300mm f5.8 . I know it's NOT full frame. But for me the issues were serious travel weight restrictions, needing a WR lens and something I could also use for birds. All those factors were used on my trip in the south Pacific and I wasn't disappointed. My other two lenses were a 20-35 FA lens (not water proof, so I had to be careful) and a 100mm f2.8 WR macro. It was a very manageable combination.

If you go with affordable FA lenses you simply won't be able to get WR. I have traveled in many tropical locations that have lots of rain. In my experience shorter lenses are less in need of WR than long lenses. I have never had any real problems with the 20-35 even in bad weather provided I take some precautions. But I have had plenty of issues with lenses in the 300mm + range, hence the WR 55-300 (Version II is the one I use).

I'm really happy with the 28-105. For your budget you could get this lens for the bulk of your shots and an ultra-wide prime if you need something wider indoors. The Irix 15mm seems to be getting good reviews, or the 14mm Samyang. Need to be comfortable with manual focus though for these primes.

Dirty little secret: The 55-300 works fine on the K-1 at the long end!

Actually, it's not quite that simple.

At 55mm there is some soft vignetting (less at infinity focus), but it rapidly increases to be worst at about 100mm.
From 100mm it starts to improve to be negligible at 200mm (especially at infinity)
Vignetting then returns somewhat as you zoom out further. At 300mm it's not bad at infinity, but quite significant at minimum focal distance.

I still consider it a crop lens.

This is with the older HD DA 55-300. The newer PLM version may behave differently.
