hi folks!

ever since i got my tamron 28-75 f/2.8, i rarely use my sigma 17-70mm. the sigma is my go to lens since i got it but now the tammy seems to have taken its place. i still use the sigma because of its wide end but other than that i used the tammy a lot more often. should i sell the sigma and get a wider lens? if not, do you see any other advantage between the tammy and the sigma other than the wide end?

please advise. thanks.

why not replace the 17-70 with a truely wide zoom, like the soigma 10-20 or pentax 12-24?

I second the 12-24 or 10-20 suggestion. If your budget won't allow for either one, then here are a couple of other suggestions...

Sigma 17-35/2.8-4
Sigma 17-35mm EX DG AF Lens for Pentax K10D K100D K110D - eBay (item 130247658270 end time Aug-27-08 09:58:05 PDT)
Pentax 18-35/4-5.6 FA J

Hmmm, I have both the tamron 28-75 and the sigma 17-70 and I think it might be a good idea to sell the sigma 17-70. The only reason I'd do that is to help fund the sigma 10-20 which I've wanted. Good idea. Now you have me thinking...

I agree it makes little sense to carry both, and I too would probably be more inclined to keep the 28-75. But if I were to sell the 17-70, I'd probably put the proceeds toward the DA21 rather than another zoom. I'm just not interested enough in extreme wide angle to bother with zooms others are suggesting. Although I suppose it could be worth waiting to see what the DA15 turns out to be like.

Lots of choices - what do you want in a wide angle?
Fixed focal lengths: DA 14, DA 21, Zenitar 16 FE
Zooms: DA 10-17 FE, DA 12-24, Sigma 10-20, etc.

Or none of the above, just sell the 17-70 if you don't shoot wider than 28mm much at all.

thank you all for your inputs. as usual, it is very helpful.

@Ash - i love also love to shoot wide and i am evaluating the wide angle lens that you and heather have recommended.

i am saving up for a 50-135mm for next year so i am looking to purchase one more cheap wide-angle lens this year. we are approaching the "ber" months and i would love to take wide angle shots during the holiday season.

as soon as i'll find a reasonably priced wide-angle lens i'll sell my sigma.

Even with the 12-24 in the bag, I've also thought about picking up a Zenitar 16, so I can have FE, as well as a smaller WA than the 12-24.

Let's see how many more lenses I can cram into my backpack.

The 17-70 is a good vacation lens though...unless you're planning on bringing your 10-20, 28-75 and some zoom with you instead of a 2 lens combo...

I've been playing with my Zenitar 16/2.8 for a couple of weeks now and now that I have worked the operational kinks out, I am pretty impressed. Great sharpness, contrast, and color. The build is a little rough around the corners (literally) and the focus throw is ridiculously short for a manual focus lens, but the package is generally sturdy. You also can't complain about size. It is about the same dimensions as my FA 35/2. The main drawbacks are that new ones take about a month to arrive from Russia and that the price of the Zenitar 16/2.8 has gone up about 40% in the last few months.

Is this lens compatible with the K10D?

Fisheye MC Zenitar-K (Pentax) 16mm f/2.8

Additionally, does anybody here have purchased from the vendor provided on the link? Any comments?

Thanks.

Wider sounds a good option...just bought the Sigma 10-20 myself although it's to compliment my Sigma 17-70 rather than replace it

I just purchased a used Zenitar FE lens yesterday and played with it all night. This is one awesome lens and very sharp too! Crude but well built.

It does not however give me that whole fisheye effect for the fun factor but as a WA lens it really serves it purpose. It seems to me I will be selling my Sigma 17-70 lens soon.

How's #3 10-20 working out for you Simon?

OP, I just got a Sigma 10-20 and it's a great lens.
