A very good lens whatever camera you put it on, Dstar.

Because the shop is going out of business, check it as soon as you get home for decentreing and front or back focus, so you can get the exchange or refund you're entitled to.

The main problem is that it gives the film-equivalent field of view of approximately a 40-120mm zoom, something we haven't seen since the Spotmatic era. The APS-C zooms starting at 18mm were designed to mimic the field of view of the old film-era zooms that went from 28mm to anywhere up to 300mm.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it if the photography you do is mostly outside and you can back off or shoot from a distance to compensate for that narrower view-field. The lens is by all accounts a fine piece of work, very very good for what it is, and if I didn't already have a lot of film-era lenses I would have bought it to go with my K-1.

Whether you buy it or not depends on which lenses you already have. If they already cover this focal length range and if you will be staying with APS-C cameras, there is no point spending extra money on this lens.

Only if you KNOW you will soon be getting the K-1, and all you have are DA zooms and/or film-era lenses and you intend taking the K-1 out in less than excellent weather, is it worth getting, as it is then a good weather-sealed option.

If you already have 18-135, a common kit lens for the K3, the 28-105 is unecessary.

Is it the new DFA 28-105 or one of the older FA film-era versions?

I bought the new D-FA and like it for outdoor events on a K3. I would say it is immaterial whether you plan to get a K1 or not, it has to fit the type of photography you will use it for with respect to the sensor size.

But the older FA 28-105 does not have good ratings from users. Check this forum's reviews of the older FA vs. the new D-FA. Which one is it????????

And if there is no store anymore, you won't be able to return it if it has decentering problems.

Or bring your camera to the shop and do some quickie tests with it.

There are three old FA 28-105 lenses, none very highly regarded. However, the new DFA 28-105 is really excellent, both on FF and APS-C. Optically, it's a couple of levels up from the DA 18-135 (and I really like that lens).

In the early 2000s I was shooting Canon and one of my lens was the 24-105L. The Pentax 28-105 is every bit the equal and better in some respects.

A good pairing on APS-C, the DA15 and DFA 28-105, I reckon.

I've got two older 28-105's. One is the Tamron 79D, which was also sold as a Pentax FA 28-105 and I've also got a power zoom FA 28-105, which is a different beast entirely. The Tamron is one of my favorite lenses and I've always been pleased with its image quality, especially for what I paid. The power zoom lens is fun on my K10D and my GX20, which both support that feature, but it makes either of those already heavy camera bodies even more so and without delivering any better image quality and maybe not quite as good.

The new D-FA 28-105 might have been intended for full frame, but I have no intention of getting the K-1 and find it to be a real gem on APS-C, perhaps due to the latter cropping the image from the best part of the image circle. The range suits me for possibly 90% of images and I can pair it with either the Tamron 10-24mm, or with the Pentax 21mm for travelling lighter.
