Any old but decent super zoom ?

Hi there,

I shoot film occasionally, and planning to get a FF when I've the funding, now I am gradually building up my FF lens line, I got couple MF prime long and short, and am looking for a decent general purpose super zoom, such as those 28-200/300. I do have a Tamron 28-200 LD IF 571D, it is fast focusing and relative silent, but the IQ is just so-so, I always need to use 'Bright mode' on my K3 to produce comparable result with my other DA lens, and since it has a very short focus throw, not ideal for MF, and I question about it's accuracy on AF. So, could someone share with me the best super zoom ever used in the 'film era', coz I do shoot film sometime, I will need manual aperture control, thanks !

Hmm...well, I have the manual focus Tamron Adaptall 2 71A (28-200), and the K-AF 171D (28-200), which is basically a K-AF version of the 71A. Both of which are probably very similar if not inferior to your 571D.

Do you have the hood to your lens? I took only the 171D to San Francisco, and was not terribly upset with the quality I got. My favorite image was actually out of an airplane window, which took some postprocessing, but came out surprisingly well.

I have the 171D and find it to be quite adequate, albeit not quite as good as its 28-105 counterpart the 79D.

Is that lower model no. means better quality lol, I don't have the hood I got the lens used, I use a metal hood instead. What about Sigma, I used the 18-250 it is quite nice, but I want a FF lens.

best "old-school" zoom for me:

Tokina AT-X 150-500mm f5.6

I'm using it for the eclipse today...

I tried the FA 28-200, a Tamron rebadge, and found it to be disappointing full size but quite acceptable reduced to 16 MP. Pixel peeping, it's not sharp, viewed at 2650x1600 the images are gorgeous. Unfortunately my 60-260 remains my work hours for lone zooms, much heavier and more bulky, but sharp pixel peeping.
