Hey dsport,
I don't know about the filter as I haven't tried one in it yet, but be careful if you loosen the knurled ring the rear section has a bayonet mount that comes off either way you turn it. Could cause an accident if not aware. I was using a monopod so I had sr on, I may try it later with the gimbal head on a tripod and see which is better. I have found sr to cause blur following birds in flight so I will probably have it off on tripod.

Thanks Marc,
I think I'll have some fun with this rig, I would love to try the sigma but can't justify the money unless I start selling some prints which I haven't got around to yet. Here is my new lens on my homemade gimbal:

an attempt at bird in flight (need to practice with the long focus throw)

That's an awesome looking rig Tom. Someday I've got to get something in that focal length.

Last week, I finally took my 500mm out for birding. Unfortunately, my target, the alcedo atthis did not appear. So just spending the whole morning with the other guys whom were carrying Canon/Nikon big glass in the park. Hence, I just tested by a few shots with flowers.

My set up

Other guys big glass

My test shots with the K500mm

On the same day, I went to another place but left my K500mm in my car. Eventually I saw the alcedo atthis but without my K500mm...a pity.
So just shoot with my 300mm. Hopes next time, I would have better luck.

alcedo atthis far far away by 300mm

try with a crop

My feeling for the K500mm is a very good len in term of price, especially it is an old design len but IQ still very good. My only regret for this len is it can't focus closely enough for near objects. However, I still like this len very much.

Hey dsport, That alcedo looks like a close relative of the kingfisher I've been trying to get a shot of. He is very shy and hard to approach I hope my k10d will balance better than the k100 super because it makes it hard to focus on my monopod, I might have to add the grip for balance (I'll see when I get the k10d back from service).

I like the flower shots the boke is very nice I think. Here is a couple from yesterday:

Good pics.
Indeed, I showed the birding pics of this thread to my colleaque whom was a Cannon user, he was shocked by the MF and also the IQ

As my uncle once said of the M-1 rifle, the only thing it needs is wheels
