The time and effort we spent mastering focus and DOF seems to be devoted exclusively to bitching about failed auto focus today. I well remember having to memorize DOF charts before being allowed to check out 'advanced' gear like the Kodak Medalist or a manual focus lens. (An', yes, it was three-miles up-hill in the snow in both directions too.

With 300mm the DoF is always little. That is why the distance marking is critical. My eye sight is still ok for critical focusing
