I am glad the FA 35mm f/2 AL will meet your needs. It also happens to be an outstanding performer, even among lenses costing far more. It produces great results, both for film use and on a DSLR.

You can't. But you also can't change the aperture on an A-series lens in 'A'.
My point was that the camera can get the correct exposure.
But you can change the aperture on a DA lens with the MZ6 or 7 hence you can have full use of the lens rather than shooting wide open all the time.

What do you mean wide open? The meter sets the appropriate aperture - on any camera with a K-A or K-AF mount.

You can't manually change the aperture the camera sets with an SF series camera, for example, but that's not the same as always wide open.

Lastly, a Pentax lens without an aperture ring will default to completely closed down on exposure, not wide open.

But yes, certain (film) cameras are advantageous in letting you manually set the aperture. Whether or not that is required or not is up to the photographer

DA 40mm XS & P3 film body

I used the XS lens with a P3 film body. The lens aperture stays closed at f/22 by default. The workaround is to put a piece of paper between the aperture pin so that it stayed around f/8.
I found it to be a very light and fast to use camera/lens combo. The attached images were all shot wide open at f/2.8.
