What do you mean wide open? The meter sets the appropriate aperture - on any camera with a K-A or K-AF mount.
You can't manually change the aperture the camera sets with an SF series camera, for example, but that's not the same as always wide open.
Lastly, a Pentax lens without an aperture ring will default to completely closed down on exposure, not wide open.
But yes, certain (film) cameras are advantageous in letting you manually set the aperture. Whether or not that is required or not is up to the photographer
