I'd recommend the samyang 85mm f/1.4. I adapt it on my sony and it compares favorably well with batis 85mm on a 24mp sensor. I find it however difficult to nail focus on my ks2 at f/1.4 without using optical preview on the lcd. It could be a struggle when shooting portraits.

The K-version is probably better than the M-version:
SMC Pentax 85mm F1.8 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Or the s-m-c Takumar version: Super-Multi-Coated Takumar/Auto-Takumar 85mm F1.8 Reviews - M42 Screwmount Telephoto Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database (not the auto-takumar it for some reason shares a topic with...)

I've always enjoyed the rendering and OOF background with the 85 f2.
I generally use it wide open in av mode.
One of my favorite M lenses.

I'm a big fan of my Rokinon (Samyang). The only gripe I have is that focus is hard to nail wide open, though I suspect that's more down to subject/camera movement than actual focus (my most common subject is an active preschooler). The DoF is that thin...

I will say the MFD is right at the edge for me. It's almost a problem on the K1. You'll never confuse this lens with a macro.

I find it plenty sharp for portraiture wide open and maybe too sharp by f2.8.

I enjoy it most around f4-5.6, where focusing is easy and there is still good background separation. And I like that it works well with PTTL.

I bought it on sale after giving up finding a M without fungus or element separation...

What about the 90mm Bokina? Also, if the lens you want is in m42, take an adapter with the spring removed and a couple drops of Loc-Tite will made it no more fiddly than an M or K + AV mode will work again. Otherwise I would go for the Sy 85.

Another vote of confidence for the Samyang. I have no experience of the Pentax-M 85mm f/2, but I own the Samyang in A-mount for use with my Sony gear and it's a lovely lens with surprisingly nice out-of-focus rendering...

No probably about it. I sold a copy of the SMC Takumar 85/1.8 (optically identical to the K) and I still miss it. It was magical.

I admit I had a bad experience with a Rokinon 85/1.4 that I bought used (sticky aperture), and I admit that I have never used the M85/2, but my genuine, certified, warrantied, brand-new Rokinon 85/1.4 is nothing but wonderful.

I'm shooting it for Single in September this month and I'm having a wonderful time. Here's the album:

There's a glow at f/1.4, but its amazing stopped down a bit, f/2.2 being my go to for dramatically thin DoF and isolation at the moment.

Thanks for all the input guys.

On a side note, I have just thought of a completely different reason to get the Pentax. It will be just another black Pentax lens with a shiny focus ring. No need to explain it to anybody, just pop it into the bag with the others and it will go unnoticed. A great big Samyang on the other hand, will need a whole lot of explaining on my part. Long time married Pentaxians will know what I mean...

Once you get to certain point they are all just black tubes on black boxes. My wife still hasn't noticed my 645Z, and I have used it in front of her

I do think that if I were to buy anything from Sy, and it was used, I would want either first hand experience with it first or a really good warranty. Both would be great.

I don't think anyone owning both would ever sell the M85. It's all about the pixie dust...

That's disturbing.

Two wives ago I had one who didn't know anything about cameras. Since then I've been seriously scrutinized.

What's your secret?

And don't say I should have kept the first one.

I have managed to pull a K 200mm f/2.5 out of the hat (read camera bag) without anybody noticing but you are in a different league, sir!
