But we really want the thread to degenerate into a zoom recommendation fest?

I was hoping to turn it into another thread where I complain that a DA 25 f2.4 doesn't exist. We could do the zoom thing, too, I have a stock response for that as well.

FAJ 18-35 @ 26mm

How about a 26mm shot?

There are endless zoom possibilities, but everyone wants primes.

norm, would you be interested in a DA 25 f2.4 that covers full frame and is built like the FA primes with metal mounts but a lot of plastic? Physical size somewhere between the FA*24 and FA 28? Because that's what I'm talking about.

Given the lack of anything under the 31 right now.... I think I'd like a 20-22 prime, were it small enough. ƒ2.4 I don't really care about. 3.5 would be close enough. I'm pretty much a landscape shooter... speed doesn't help me much. I'm always stopped down.

The 20-40 would have been perfect if it were an FF lens.

That's my other idea, something like an 18 f3.x or 4.0, and build it like the Limited or 100 Macro WR with a lot of metal and such. I don't think they should do one without the other.

I always feel with the K-1 I can crop to APS-c size and still have an image that will excel for 99.5% of what I do, and 18mm would be perfect for that. After all you can make a 22mm field of view from an 18mm FoV by cropping, but you can't make an 18mm FoV from a 22mm FoV.

I have a Sigma 28mm f1.8 macro as well. I use it for close work. It's very nice but it is pretty huge.

On the other hand I have a DA21mm which is just a pleasure to use, and produces very nice images.

Thanks for the advice the Sigma 28 f1.8, may sway me, unless I can pick up the 31mm for the price I want .I don't want anything as wide as 35mm equivalent. I recently sold my X100, as I was finding it too wide for many things and not wide enough for others I find 40-45mm perfectly good for many things, and coupled with my 50mm da or 50mm macro 2 lenses are all I need for most days out. I don't like standard or wide zooms as I only end up at one end or other, and usually they loose speed at the long end where you need it most.

I love FA 31 on K-3. It fits for most of my street and landscape photos.
It paints great bokeh when it opened wide and it's greatly sharp in full field when it is stopped down.
But There are couple things which I have to pay attention:
  • Autofocus likes to cling to anything behind the subject
  • Catches ghosts in some conditions

I am going to throw a pitch for a two lens kit that covers wide normal to slight telephoto normal and is exceptionally high quality and compact: DA 21 and DA 40 Limiteds. Depending on your budget either used SMC versions or new HD DA versions. They are a great match for the K-3. Only issue its hard to stop there, you will likely also want a DA 70 Limited and/or DFA 100 macro WR. If you can find a good used F 28mm f2.8 that could be a good choice as well. If you are only after one lens consider also the DA 35 macro Limited.

one caveat about the Sigma 28 that was mentioned: it is large; bigger (longer and heavier) than either Sigma 30mm mentioned... I'm not sure if it's because of the close-focus (they label it a 'macro', but it isn't to my mind) or if it's just an older design...

pepperberry, is it maybe due to better correction and across frame sharpness/IQ? Shots you've shared from your 28 makes me think the 30 isn't nearly as versatile although I'd still like to try one out some day.
