I thought that even those who merely dared to try deserve some respect, let alone getting four correct. Very impressive.

Well done!

Thanks to all who participated, specially the ones who took the risk to guess!.

Neither of the lenses has dissapointed me, maybe itīs true that thereīs no such thing as a bad 135mm lens.

I should send you my Vivitar M135... you might change your mind. My testing has consistently shown it to be the absolute worst lens I own, and in some tests has been used as my example of how bad a lens can be.

Well, AFAIK Vivitar is mostly a "lens re-brander" and not a lens maker, so quality should vary.
I myself have a Vivitar zoom 75-205 f3.5 (it came in a pack) which I consider very good.

Keep that lens, as it could be the only bad 135mm it may cost a fortune in the future!

Just exactly which Vivitar 135 is that, Norm?

Vivitar 135 1:2.8 Auto Telephoto No. 28831820... Does that help? It's a K mount lens but no contacts, just the Aperture lever. Labeled a P/K mount.

Does that help?

You did much better than I did - brave to try so many too. I have had some success on these when there was a huge bokeh difference and when there was a known sample or too to compare with. But honestly I can say that none of these is bad. The difference as always is more about lighting, composition, the eye of the person taking the picture etc. It has been an eye opener over time to see this.

A lot of luck was involved ( I don't intend to try another test!!!). My approach was totally by observing the bokeh and logically placing them. Most interesting is that the 4 I got wrong include the 3 pentax 3.5s in the wrong order -- they would be impossible to tell apart from my experience.

What I could try to tell apart :

So I got some right and many I could not ID down further than 2 choices.

1 SMC Pentax 135mm f3.5 - Stronger contrast (suggesting SMC) and the Hex in the oof highlights
6 SMC Pentax 135mm f2.5 - the slight softness at wide open, but still rather good contrast (suggesting SMC) and the most OOF (suggesting the largest f-stop)
5 Pentacon Auto 135mm f2.8 - its was either #6 or #5
7 Takumar 135mm f3.5 or M 135mm f3.5 - a bit of hex in the OOF highlights but I can't remember the specifics of the bokeh otherwise
2,4 Jupiter 11A 135mm f4 - Looking out for the slightly funkier bokeh that Sonnar have wide open (though longer FL have less) and more rounded OOF highlights. as well as lower contrast from the old coatings. In my (weak) defense, I only have the J9 and a Nikkor ltm 135mm though.

Zero knowledge on the other lenses.

IMO, its a good showing in this use situation for 1,7,8, incidentally the f3.5 Pentax lenses.
Sharpish for the subject, good non-funky/edgy bokeh, good contrast.
Smallish too as 135mm lenses.

I have a Weltblick (or "Welt Blick") that might be a candidate

Although, to be fair, I would probably not be able to pick it out in a test like this.

Never had a Weltblick lens... And after this, probably never will.
Anyway, for this test I used all the 135mm that I have, didn't really choose.

That's the trouble with these tests, people have lenses that they would like to see how they stack up, but no one ever sends you the lens.
