Sigma 10-20.. it's a good copy !!

Took my 3rd copy of the Sigma 10-20 down to Snowdonia yesterday for a bit of a hike & I'm pleased to say it's a good copy...

It will take a little getting used too as foreground detail becomes even more important to maintain perspective when the field of view is so enormous...never realised before just how much more landscape it would capture, I've also noticed in PP that it takes more sharpening than my Sigma 17-70, probably around 50%

here are a few of the shots

Lies! There is no such thing as a good copy of the Sigma 10-20mm. I went through three of them before I gave up.

Really though... congrats on the good copy. Nice shots too. Looks like a dream when all you see is dirty city like I do.

What are the symptoms of a 'bad copy'?

I have the 10-20 and love the FOV it can offer, but I find it less than razor sharp occasionally?

It is better now that I have specified an AF adjustment for it in the K20D, but I'm not 10% sold. I probably have some time left to do an over the counter exchange

Thanks guys,

there really are good copies out there but they do seem to take some finding, this was 3rd & last attempt...fortunately it turned out successful...

the previus 2 copies both had differing issues, the 1st was extremely soft/unsharp on the R/H side & the second was completely awful, just was completely out of focus...

this one is nice and sharp & even across the frame, although 10mm shows some soft corners - inevitable I guess.

I'm thinking of going back to using Hyperfocal Distance for focusing with the 10-20 though as I find I need to be very close to foreground elements so need maximum DOF - initial thoughts are that 12mm is the best sharpness/lack of disortion combination

Congratulations on getting a good copy, it seems with lens that's what you have to do sometimes to get one that makes you happy. Great pics, and I can see why you wanted a 10-20 you have the perfect landscape for it, and that lens just takes it all in. With a good copy of the Sigma 17-70mm, and Pentax 55-300 you are all set; you can cover 15-450mm with great quality. But I bet you gotta small case of LBA and we will see what your next lens is lol.

1st copy was badly de-centred, very soft on the R/H side, the 2nd copy was truly awful - everything I shot was out of focus. This was my last attempt, fortunately it turned out o.k !!

thanks

simon
