Best lens for Action Sports

Hi everyone!
I am shooting a K10D. Love it. I also am using a 31mm limited lens. I have recently been shooting football. The 31mm limited is nice but does not cut it for sideline shots. To far away. So................................
What is the best lens for shooting action shots from the sidelines with my K10D, not only football all action shots indoors and outdoors.
Also what filter should I have for my lenses if any.

Thank You,
EAD Studios

To calculate the lens focal length that you would prefer for your shots, take the images you have that were not satisfied with and find out how much of a crop you need.

If your player shots take up 1/5 of the image, and you want them full frame, the focal length you need is (5 * 31) = 155mm. If you are strictly a prime shooter, a 135 mm lens would be your choice. If you would use a zoom for these photos, the DA* 50-135 sounds like just the ticket. Only you can say which lens would be best for you.

i did some street photography and the FA31 didn't cut it either. i also had an FA77 but I had to get creative with the framing. your best bet would be the DA* 50-135 as Albert said. plenty of versatility and good quality wide open.

Is the DA* 50-135 going to be close enough being at the sidelines though. Ill probably will have to crop? Very good lens it seems to be indeed. What other alternatives are their? I want to stick with a very good lens being a limited prime lens user.

Lenses in the 70-200 range work quite well for outdoor sports, or indoor sports if they are fast enough and/or you have a powerful flash. If you can find either an older used 70-200 f2.8 lens or one of the new Sigma or Tamron lenses in that range (I'm not sure if they have been released for Pentax yet or are still upcoming) then that may do what you are looking for. I shot sports for years with an old 80-200 one touch lens on film and often found it lacking in reach, however the digital crop factor takes care of that problem in most situations.

To extend a little on canadian rockies, and the "calculation

Image size = object size x focal length / object distance (keep all in same units of measurement)

remember also that a full frame shot is either 16 or 24 mm depending upon vertical or landscape format.

I have shot sports with everything from a 10-20mm sigma ultra wide angle (Tae-Kwon-Do from the corner of the sparring ring) to 400mm (baseball from the center feild bleachers)

what yoou need to remember is that with sports, usually fast lenses are a necessity. My current indoor combo is a tamron 28-75 F2.8 and Sigma 70-200 F2.8. If I find I am in the right focal length range, I will also use my 50mm F1.4 or my 135 F2.5 just ofr extra speed

I started the same quest a few months ago and decided that 200mm and f2,8 is a must. So I wait for the Tamron 70-200 f2,8. I tried the Pentax DA* 50-135 but it was somewhat short.

The best lens for sports action

But the 200mm is a set zoom of 200 and that is it, correct? I definitely would like to stick with the DA* lenses or the limited.
Is there a web site that compares actual pictures set at the lenses zoom level to compare the zoom that would be most useful for me?
I trust all of your input and I thank you for that. As you know every photographer has their own style.
This purchase is going to set me back a little but finding the zoom lens is a #1 priority for me.
A zoom lens that I will be able to take all action sport shots and not be disappointed. Low light conditions without using a flash is also a must. I don't like using flash much at all. Any and all inputs welcome.

My choice is between the DA* 50-135 or the DA* 200mm.
Which lens would be best.
Thank You, you people helped me to decide this. Now I need input from you to decide which would be best.
