200mm prime + TC, vs budget 300mm zoom?

How would an old 200mm prime such as a SMC Pentax-M 200mm F4, or SMC Pentax-A 200mm F4 coupled to a good quality teleconverter compare in image quality to a budget 300mm zoom such as SMC Pentax-FA 100-300mm F4.7-5.8 , or Sigma AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro Super?

*Most TCs are 1.4 (280 is close enough to 300 for me)

My favourite 300mm lens is FA*300, next one DA*200 2.8 with Tamron-F AF 1.4x converter.
Those two kits are FF so good for K-1.
I do have FA 100-300 the silver version, it is good but not comparable with the two above.

The black version is not so good.

Never used Sigma 70-300.
You should perhaps look at Pentax AF 1.7 teleconverter, still few floating around in the used market.
That one is very clever, will give you AF with old MF lenses and IQ is great.
So with A 200 F4 you will need just to prefocus ( AF converter has a limited AF range) 1.7x converter and it will take care of focus, very cool.
kind regards

One thing to keep in mind is that telephoto lenses have shorter focal length than stated.
For example, the DA300 is 278mm and a 1.4X TC may be 1.35X or 1.43X, but probably not 1.40X.
An A200 + 1.4 TC = 280mm, but in reality it might only be 190 X 1.35 = 257mm.

In a nutshell, get the Pentax.

I have the Sigma 70-300mm and an SMC Pentax M 200mm f/4. The Sigma was pretty good value for the $100 that I paid, but there is no comparison between the two. The Pentax is in a completely different league. While I have never tried it with a 1.4x TC, I am sure that if you get the Pentax 1.4x-S converter you will be very happy.

I’ve had Sigma, Vivitar and several Pentax zooms that we’re 300 on the long end. I still have the Pentax 55-300, but it sees very little use. Especially since I now have a K 300 f/4. The K, M and A versions are quite affordable and image quality is far above what the zooms can provide.

Just make sure with an older lens, if you use the 1.7 for 1.4 and the lens is prone to purple fringing or CA< it will be much worse with the TC. It works great on my DA*200 and DA* 60-250, but fringes terribly on an the F 70-210.
