New lens question

I picked up this lens on the weekend.

Pentax 50mm prime F2

Pentax Lens Review Database - 50mm F2

Just wondering if there is an ideal distance from subject to test the quality of the lens. I could take a picture of a treeline that is 200 feet away, but if I'm to zoom in on those trees, at that distance, it would not be sharp. There must be an ideal / recommended distance that I could use to judge if this lens is working the way it should.

Thanks for your input.

10-20 feet should do the trick.

I have the A version 50mm f2 and just found out its not good for focusing far away objects. Even tho I set it at infinity focus, I can tell the image is OOF without pixel peeping. I will now use it for close up and portrait…the effective 75mm FOV on my k200d seems perfect for the job.

Sounds like a defective lens. The lens is certainly capable of decent infinity focus, but of course, it's not the highest-resolving lens in the world, so you can't get the same kind of detail you can at closer distances. And of course, that's really the of any lens.

Having my first DSLR and the A 50 f2 for only 2 months, I am more inclined to believe its my problem rather than the lens' . But your words sure did open up another possibility, now I will need to find sometime to really test it out. The last time I used it for about 30 shots in pitch dark and I was in a hurry so that may be the problem.
