sigma 70-300 or Pentax 50-200

For a K100D should I buy a SIGMA 70-300 DG or the Pentax 50-200.
With the rebate the SIGMA is only slightly cheaper.
I'd like the extra telephoto but not at the price of quality or functionality.

Thanks
SR

this kinda thing makes me smile.. the sigma is not some inferior qualty thing compared to a pentax lens.. u will get superior image quality from it..

the only thing the pentax lens has going for it.. is its small and neat.. money wise the sigma is worth twice what the pentax glass is..

just think yourself lucky it has the name sigma on it as opposed to pentax..

The Pentax DA50-200 has pretty good quality, given its price, but shots from the Pentax lens really suck at 300m. It comes down to what you need. If you need 300mm, get a 300 mm, but I've read that the Sigma 70-300's , while sharp do dump some chromatic abs on your pics. You do get what you pay for.

the newer sigma dg is pretty good as regards "chromatic abs".. the cheaper tamron 70 x 300 suffers a little in this respect but the apo dg sigma dosnt.. both the tamrom and sigma 70 x 300 varients are extraordinary value for money..

u get what u buy not what u pay for.. he he

Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG Macro
Sigma 70-300mm DG macro

Pentax SMC 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DA ED
Pentax 50-200mm

both seem good, but at 300mm the sharpness drops alot on the sigma
but the pentax doesnt have 300mm so... its your choise!

I think the question is only, do you need 300mm, if you do, would you like
to carry that long of a lense in front of your camera?

If i'd need the 300mm i'd go with the APO DG instead but its more expensive!

i would bet money that at 200mm the end point of the pentax but a sweet spot for the sigma the image quality from the sigma would wipe the floor with the pentax..

i have the sigma apo dg.. its as sharp as a tack at 300mm wide open.. it really is a classic lens.. for double the money it would be good.. for the money it is.. its a miracle.. he he

the only thing the pentax lens has going for it is its small neat isze.. nothing else..

the cheap tamron is also tack sharp wide open at 300mm.. but not so good for fringing.. another miracle lens.. my son has one of those..

True, but its not nothing else, the 50-200 has better edge sharpness over the range, and at wider aperture the sharpness is better also (f/8 and under), the lens
is constant over the range too, the MTF rating is about the same 50mm up to 200mm..

I'm not saying in anyway the 50-200 is better than the sigma non-apo dg,
but i would'nt say that the "sigma would wipe the floor with the pentax.." either..

I think you would be happy with either of those lens.

Yeah from what I've read definitely go for the APO Sigma over the non-APO one. As for the 50-200 or 70-300 it depends what you need or want more really.

Re; Sigma

Ugh,

Now I'm really confused.

If I'm getting this clear the SIGMA DG is as good as the pentax, it's just bigger and obviously goes further.

I don't really want to spend another 100$ for the APO, so its Pentax ~ 180 (after rebate) or Sigma DG ~130 (No rebate). What does the APO get you ?

I haven't done the size and weight comparison. I figure either one is going to be bulky compared to my point and shoot.

I'll be honest: I'm trying to rationalize not buying the new Oly SP-550 (18x) or a fuji or pana super zoom. The longer range of the SIGMA gets me closer to SP550 range. For ~$600 I can pick up the K100D and Tele lens and I think that is a better value overall , quality, etc. In addition my first camera was a K1000 from my dad, so that marketing, nostalgia memory thing is working on me.

Thank you for the help

Read darkstorm's link for what the APO gives you

APO will get you better image quality in terms of more sharpness, less CA.

SLR's are typically heavier than P&S's. The few execptions would be the Sony R1 and perhaps the Panasonic FZ20/30/50 and Fuji S9000/9100 depending on what lens is mounted.

Yes I think I remember you posted something about your lenses in the welcome threads? The K100/110D will give you compatibility with the lenses from the K1000. You will not have nearly as much reach as the Mega Zooms but you will have higher ISO that will give you a few more keepers if you shoot faster action or "lower lighting" (your mileage will vary with lens)

Went searching for prices on the sigma and found this review from an owner:
The features and focus thing has me concerned, is it correct ?

Good lens but bright, January 31, 2007
3 of 5 people found the following review helpful.

Review:

This lens seems to work well but most photos are
overexposed with the Pentax K110D. Set the expose .5 to 1
stop darker. Focus is inconsistent but with multishot setting, 1
of 3 appears in focus. Not all features of the K110D work with
the lens. When using anything other than auto or program
mode, attempting to reach the F Stop is difficult due to the
design of the Pentax lens cover. But, overall, not a bad lens.
But, if you need all features of the camera stay with the 50 -
200 Pentax lens. I have both and will probably not use this

if u want cheap and the most range.. i have a panasonic FZ20 and know exactly where u are coming from..

k100 with kit lens and the tamron 70 x 300 to go with it.. u need more range throw in a cheap tamron 1.4 converter and u will have it..

as for the pentax corner to corner consistancy yes.. but i think i read it as consistant mediocrity.. no good points no bad points just consistantly average.. a description that probably fits the other kit lens as well.. when u dont start off that sharp in the centre its easier to be consistant right acrross the frame.. he he

ps.. this link delves into the apo and none apo sigmas..

Wow that's great! Thanks for the link! Haha I can't believe all hype surrounding the APO status. I looked at the MTF's before and they looked exactly the same. (Now I know there's a slight improvement) but this its fairly negligiable to APS. Should have just LBAed for that instead of like a cupboard full of old school second hand lenses haha.
