Thoughts on an ultra wide zoom.

Hello All

I have my sights set on an ultrawide zoom. No rush on this, I can wait and have an interest in the upcoming DA* 11-18. While looking at the current options, I noticed the lowest priced lens of those reviewed is the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 HSM which is down to $399. I am looking for feedback from anyone who has this lens and also those who have the Pentax 12-24 f4.0. My dilemma is the following:
1. Wait for and save up for the DA* 11-18 and get the best.
2. Grab the Sigma while it is selling for such a low price.
3. Go for the current Pentax 12-24 even though it is a lot more expensive at $699
4. Realize I already have a great WA in the DA 15 Limited and don't give in to LBA.
Thoughts on the matter appreciated!

If you really need zoom, save the money for the best glass for the job, you DO have a great UWA in a 15mm, lower than that you start getting into fisheye territory.

To my mind you want a wide angle to take it all in, no need for a zoom. If you are on crop sensor the DA 10-17 mm is a great fisheye to UWA ar a lower price point. Otherwise stick with the 15mm prime.

The Sigma 8-16 is great. Also have a lot of love for the 10-17 fisheye.

Another choice is to learn to stitch panoramas. Works well sometimes.

I've been using the Sigma and am happy with the performance. If I need to rectify any objects I use DxO OP 11 with the ViewPoint addin.

SIGMA 10-20mm CLUB - PentaxForums.com

The 10-20mm will always give you something the 15mm can't. 10-14mm. It can also use filters, which the 8-16 can't.

I have the Pentax 12-24 and it's very good, JD. But that Sigma is very good too and look at its price!

I am very happy with 12-24 (big lens for APSC but good quality). If you have DA 15, wait and choose between those after; maybe you don't need anymore
another UWA

Similar situation with me.
I am waitting for the DA* 11-18. I will see what 11-18 can do and I might have to sale my 15, but keep 21. I am looking for wide WR lens.
I hope (a little) Pentax will have it for hand-on test in CP+ 2018 in Yokohama.

That 10-20 or the cheaper f4-5.6 is often available used on the marketplace for even less. I think it would be useful to try a used one before committing to a high proceed DA* lens to be sure it is a focal range you like.

I can't link it now, but Pentax forums did an ultrawide shootout with several lenses including the Sigma 10-20 lenses.

I have owned the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 and have been happy with it for architecture and landscapes with my K-5 and K-5iis.
I would love a chance to try out the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG if one can be found in the secondary market.

Have you seen the 5 way comparison of UWA lenses here on Pentaxforums?

I love the Rokinon 8mm on my K-1. Sharp, good color and inexpensive.... Consider it....

I use a Sigma 8-16, which I bought after considerable research.

Here's my most recent uncropped image taken at 14mm with a K-1.

Think about the timing and the cost. The DA*11-18 is expected to be available in "summer 2018". The Tokina 11-18 on which it is based costs around $US400. I imagine that, on release, the Pentax version, with the DA* treatment, will cost considerably more than that, probably more than the current price of the DA 12-24, and more in line with the price of other DA* lenses. There will be a pretty hefty early-buyer premium. The sensible thing would be to wait until at least Black Friday 2018, or even into 2019.

Much as I like my DA 12-24, $US700 is a lot for an interim solution - and the secondhand value of that lens will fall considerably when the 11-18 comes out. If I were in your position I'd go with either the 10-17 Fisheye (which de-fishes pretty well, and offers something different) or one of the Sigma 10-20s (if they are much more affordable than the 12-24). The Sigmas were pretty competitive with the DA 12-24 in the PF comparison. As for option 4 (just sticking with the DA 15), there's a big difference between 10mm, or 12mm, and 15. And I find a wide-angle zoom handy because there are plenty of times I can't zoom with my feet: like standing on stones in a river, or in tight in a forest as here:
