So... just got the DA*55 and boy, am I very happy with it so far. Extreme low light shooting, and focus is precise and fast. And the rendering... WOW! It has got some special x-factor composed into every image I can tell you that.
The limiteds will have to wait in my case, but for now I'm certain I've got the lens that I desired. The OOF areas are a dream even in low light!

A quick sample I took as one of the first testing images (got some of my best shots yet of my 11m son, but I have a thing with not wanting to post pictures of him to the internet) :

This thread has been so helpful for me, I appreciate everyone's help!

As a crop body shooter, I wish that the FA 31 design ethos had been applied to something in the mid-20mm range. I've got the DA 35 2.4 and don't really like the field of view on APS-C. The 31 would be better, but I find myself wishing my Sigma 28mm EX was just a bit wider, so I know the 31 would *for me* be a step in the wrong direction.

The DA*55 seems like a wonderful lens from everything I've seen and heard of it. Obviously a very different lens than the FA 31 but you know that going in. Hope you enjoy it and share some of your pictures here.

The 20-40 isn't small enough and isn't fast enough. It isn't without appeal but it's not what I'm asking for.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the FA* 24 is a great lens.

K10D and FA* 24
