The Jupiter works with a pre-set aperture. This means you turn 1 ring in the front of the lens to the aperture you want, and turn another to manually close the diaphragm to that aperture.

Don't worry, it will have markings, you just can't see them on the picture.

I have the same lens and am very pleased with it. A little soft at f2, but very nice at f2.8

The markings are on the far side of the lens on the same surface where it is marked "MC Jupiter - 9". The setup is a little different in that the aperture ring is the first ring from the front, followed by the preset ring, followed by the focus ring.

you are right! there are 2 ring for aperture + 1 ring for manual focus!

i didn't see the first ring in the front of the lens (on the same surface where it is marked "MC Jupiter - 9") and on this ring there are the number (2 2.8 4...)!!

aslo, theoretically you dont have to select "2" or "2.8"

if you put the aperture selector into the maximum and just leave it there, then use the secondary aperture ring to choose from an infinite selection of diaphragm diameters....

if you want 2.0001, you got it, 2.7459908, you got it

Gooshin is right. In practice, you use the Av mode and have the option of moving the preset ring until you have the shutter speed or DOF you desire.

Are there any issues with infinity focus on the M39 version?

I'm using the genuine (flangeless) Pentax M42-K adapter, and would have an M39-M42 adapter on the lens too, of course.

Some say there's a slight register length difference between M39 and M42:

I find myself using 2.458961 most of the time. It seems to provide just the right DoF.

As far as I know:
- Silver is m39 (45,5 working flange) version
- Black is m42

(the same thing with Helios-40 (silver m39) and Helios-40-2 (black m42) - 85/1.5)

My understanding is that the black versions are all M42 and that all M39 versions are silver. The silver lenses supposedly were made in several different mounts including M39 and M42.

Edit: Regarding black versions of the Jupiter-9. The Kiev medium-format bayonet version of the J-9 was also done in black (Yes there is a Kiev bayonet version...made by Arsenal in the Ukraine with a very attractive build and fully auto diaphragm as well!)
