Got a good deal on a SMC PENTAX-A 1:1.7 50mm canít get the A auto position to work on aperture ring camera wonít recognize.
K10D maybe that's why a good deal right Lol. Anyone have trouble with this sort of thing something I should try? Or just tape an M over the A on front of lens.

Make sure the contacts on the lens are clean. I use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts on the lens. Also check to make sure the contacts are not depressed. That happened to me once, for some reason (dirt too small to see?) the auto aperture contact was depressed below the level of the mount, wasn't making contact with the camera, I gave it a poke with a toothpick and it popped up. Problem solved.

Thank You

That is exactly what it was. The gold contact linkage was broken. When the aperture ring is turned from the auto lock position to manual aperture position the contact is retracted and in auto it is extended by a linkage system that is very small and thin and had worn out. So I had a choice leave the lens to work as manual aperture or rig it in auto. I went with full time auto. I do not suggest removing the mounting plate and doing what I did unless you have some experience working with small stuff. There is a ball bearing for the aperture ring smaller than a grain of sand. I used a contact from old broken plastic zoom lens (knew not to trash that thing good for parts someday). So now I have a good working auto 1:1.7 50mm sweet. Now on with the rest of the day to take pictures with it.
